I need some opinions..before I go and burn another whole in my wallet...Im plannin on buyin another car for the wifey..so far we have 2 choices..Volkswagons NewBeetle Turbo S (comes out end of Jan2002) or Nissan Sentra SE-R SpecV?? They say the Turbo S is gonna competing w/ the Celica, RSX, Civic SI....then again Im hearing a lot of good input on the SpecV too...the Spec V is a little cheaper too...which one should I go with?? help please...??

The only way to really know which car is better is to test drive them. We could sit here and discuss every detail, but you will never know exactly how a car behaves unless you get behind the wheel.

Girls usually like the beetle more, plus turbos are fun to hook up if you get bored.

much to my regret, the Nissan has been taking some real hits in the performance press. SCC sees less power than expected, and I have yet to see a review give it a 1/4 in less than 15.7. It should be faster than that. The 6 spd shifter has also been universally panned.
On the other front, I don't think anyone will seriously say that the Beetle is a handler. Of course, I could be wrong... or biased.
Of the two, I hate to say it, but the Beetle is probably a better bet right now- the jury is still out on the Nissan, but it doesn't look real good from my viewpoint. I'm a Nissan guy, too, Darn it......

SCC is stupid. why are they so pissed the VSpec lost 20% of the engine's horsepower? The RSX lost 20% and they didnt' say anything about it being "over rated by Acura" BS!
the Vspec has 17in wheels and LSD too.. doesn't help on the dyno
Also, real world 1/4 mile times for the Vspec Stock has 15.1 to 15.3

I find that quite amusing ron when i know of a few beetles who could beat most celica's running w/o nos, hell i've heard of some beetles that are TT and AWD, and I've seen some pretty mean looking beetles at car shows. Granted theyre not for everyone but the celica has also been called a b!tches car.

I wouldn't be caught dead in a beetle. I mean great it may go faster than my car but still.
I can go to a gas station and have an 80 year old guy come up to me and talk to me for like 5 mins about how nice a car I drive with my celica. .... you think that's gonna happen when you drive a beetle.. .

Instead of an 80 year old guy....... You'll get a nice, nubile young 18 year old girl? :D
SCC may be stupid, but they got much better drive losses out of the Celica (159hp stock I think it was.)
Other car mags have been similarly hard on the Spec V, Car and Driver for a specific example.
Admittedly, most of the same mags were only getting mid 15s out of the GT-S, too, but the overwhelming lack of enthusiasm I've seen for the Sentra bodes poorly for it. And I was so angry when the Sentra was announced 3 months after I bought my Celica (I traded in a 92 SE-R for the GT-S.)
I know, I'll save my pennies for a WRX STi, Evo 7 or 350Z. That's a better plan.

Um, on one side, if you need your car to get chicks , then you probably need help with other things as well. On the other side I don't see how a beetle is gunna help you get chix, I mean I've talked to numerous women that think it's a cool car, but they never think a guy would want one.
Chicks always go for the wrong guy, the asshole, the ****, they ain't looking for a guy in touch with his feminine side... which i think you'd seriously have to be into to want an egg shaped beetle...

Sleeper.
Like that messed up twin engine Hyundai Tiburon that's out there.
Not that I'm interested, mind you. The only Audi/VW that I'm interested in these days is the S4.

I just rode in a Spec V, that car is damn fast dude!!
Too bad it redlines at alittle over 6000RPM, maybe a power fc would change that. But it got to 100mph in no time with 4 people in the car. It is a nice fast car, would not mind having one.

I hear you on this It would be fun to have a sleeper, I was talkin with a little rich kid the other day and all he could say is,,, well if you got XX car it'd be a sleeper...
Well I want a car that looks nice and goes nice. Not "oh yeah?! well at the track i'll kill ya", even though my car is gay looking.
I don't have the financial resources to "make a sleeper" If I had my way right now, I'd build up my celica all motor and have a 13 second hi 12 second daily driver. (which you can do with a type-r) I just wish that someone somewhere would hear the cries of us Celica owners and do a kit...

well this goes back to the whole reason I put up this "Thread"...this car is gonna be for my wife and my baby girl thats on the way..not for me to drive, its for her..and I know its a chick car..thats why she like it...Im lookin into safety at the most part since my wife/daughter are gonna be the ones mainly in it..and that damn Beetle even though is so small..is one of the safest things runnin on four wheels..its got airbags up the @$$!! the reason I like the Turbo S..is for them damn ricer-wannabes that always rev at anything w/ two legs!! Take them by surprise, know what I mean??
As for the Spec V..I know them Nissans are quick when worked on..I was a previous 200SX SE-R owner w/mods of course..and I loved it..of course when the Celi came out, I knew I wanted something different! My brother currently drives a 2001 Sentra SE..w/ several mods..and that car is quick..I know for sure he can blow me out..he was runnin mid 14's!! You know he was pissed when he found out the V Spec was coming out...
Well sorry I didnt realize this was so long...thanx for everyones opinions though..really appreciate it... :D

Why does everyone spell it Spec V when everyone pronounces it V Spec?

Ya want the technical answer??
Nissan calls it the Spec V to differentiate from the Skyline GT-R V Spec. But not too far- some brand ID is good.
