Been lurking around the board looking for information about the 1ZZ-FE vvti motors and what Celica owners were doing to squeeze power from the 1ZZ-fe motor.

I don't own a Celica anymore, But I do have a 2001 Corolla S that shares the same motor as the Celica GT. I am on a quest to get the most amount of power out of my motor without sacrificing reliability and the ability to pass a smog test. I am eagerly waiting for Toyota to finally release the TRD supercharger for the 03 Rolla/Matrix to see if it is something I can modify to fit my car. I have been told the only issue with the s/c and the earlier 1ZZ-fe motors is clearance and not the motor itself. If this is true I can see an s/c in my near future as I could get a carbon fiber hood made and the radiator and a/c lines could be relocated fairly easy. If not, I'll have to wait with you guys for the Spyder/Celica charger to bump up boost.

My question for you guys is this: I have an opportunity to buy a 1zz-fe non vvti motor from a 99 corolla for real cheap to work on and need to know if the bottom end is the same as the vvti motors? If the bottom end is the same and I can top it with my current head which has already been worked, then I can build up the bottom and not lose the ability to drive the car. I plan on replacing the rods and pistons to increase compression to about 9:1 and am still debating whether or not to sleeve the cylinders. I've heard from both sides about the pros and cons about sleeving but am still not certain I really need to. I've been told by a Toyota Tech that the block is capable of handling up to 300HP without a problem. But installing pins between the block and head would almost be a must to reduce shifting. I really don't see myself hitting 300 especially with my budget. I need to keep my sights a little down to earth as I really only have about 5 grand to play with and the s/c will take about 3 grand alone leaving me 2 grand to build the block and upgrade my injectors and fuel system. Maybe next year I'll put a little bit more in and upgrade the computer and add a fuel management system but not this year...

I would really like to build the block out of the car and still have the car available for use as I just sold my 84 Celica on Ebay (Last night as a matter of fact) and my girl crunched the 4Runner (4 inch Metal pipe mail box post filled with concrete with 4 feet in the ground alone) so it will be in the shop for a while. Even when we get the 4Runner back, she uses it too much for us to even think of sharing vehicles.

I know I don't own a Celica anymore but you guys and the MRS guys do more to improve the performance of the car and motor than the Rolla guys do I started a thread on VVTI.net and got nothing but smart ass answers so I knew I was dealing with people who really didn't know much about what it takes to build a high horsepower I specified no turbo in the post as there is no such thing as a CARB legal turbo and just about every person that replied said to add a turbo... Need I say more?

I really hope you guys can help me here. I have read quite a bit on this board and have learned so much about our motors and what can be done. I hope to continue learning and hope to be of some help to you guys possibly down the road.

As far as I know both non vvti and vvti 1zz-fe engines share the same bottom end (same bore x stroke, same compression), and head.

We're basically in the same spot as the corolla guys. Lot's of aftermarket for bolt-ons such as air intakes and exhausts, bodykits, lots of appearence items. BUT we really don't have a lot of forced induction applications available, except for nitrous, but that's basically a universal modification.
We have some people on the board who have done their own turbo projects using custom manifolds and fuel management systems, etc.
Also there should be a turbo kit coming out for the Celica's 1zz-fe from David Draper, West Covina Motorsports(check the sponsors page and forced induction forum for more info.), which can possibly fit with the corolla, but until it comes out nobody knows. It will most likely come with some sort of piggyback ECU and bigger fuel injectors, I'm sure the injectors will work w/ the corolla 1zz-fe but not too sure about the p.b. ecu.

Enjoy the board.
Welcome.

I have a corolla 2001 1zz rolla motor sitting in my room. The motors are identical internally. except all the part numbers are different so the parts can be easily differenciated. i tried to swap this motor into my celica when i blew my motor, but the mount patterns dont match up. the intake manifold is different, the exhaust manifold is different, and the ECU mapping is different other than that they have the same bore, stroke, compression, same head.

I believe that the Non-VVTi block also does not have the oil passage that feeds the VVTi OCV in the head.
