View Full Version : Ugh...I have to remove my front bumper!

Well, it's official, since I am running only ~4 inches of clearance, I am going to have to remove my front bumper to get my car serviced and aligned. This sucks because I don't remember exactly how to remove the front bumper cover and I am worried about driving around without the bumper on. So I have a couple questions...

1. Anyone know of a good tutorial on how to remove the bumper that goes into good detail? Nasty N8's no longer has the pics up, so it isn't telling me anything I don't already know. Also, what tools am I going to need for this job?

2. Will driving about 40 miles round trip without a bumper on mess anything on my car up? I plan on having this car in the show car circuit after this summer when I do a complete makeover, but I cannot afford to have to get something redone because it gets messed up. Will I get pulled over for not having a bumper?

:werd: This is useful info to about anyone. I don't want to put an intake on my car, but I really need to get some info on how to do this by the end of the week. My car needs its 3k oil change...and I am 10 miles overdue already. No, I can't get a floorjack under the car either. I have called every alignment place in my area too, and all of them tell me that there is no way they can get my on a lift, or an alignment machine.

if you wnat to jack it up jsut use the one with the car till you get it high enough to get the floor jack under it. That should fix your oil change problems but the alignment is a bigger problem

I've taken my front bumper off so many times I can do it in under 2 minutes flat. I dont even need to jack it up or look for the bolts/screws, I know exactly where they are by feel. Point is, once you do it 2-3 times, its really really easy. Here is a step by step:

Thank you very much Mistrimeat...this is exactly what I needed.

Now my only question is this: will driving around without the bumper on mess up my car in any way or get my pulled over? I can't afford for either to happen.

i dont think youll get pulled over but im pretty sure if you dont have something covering your radiator then if a rock or small object hits it then it might mess up something... i thought they did a recall on the 00 celis because they didnt have a proper grill installed? maybe i just imagined it.

you should just take it off at the place you need to get the alignment done at. just bring a wrench and a screwdriver.

I asked them if I could do this and they told me I could not.

The thing is that I am probably going to have a hard time doing this in the first place and doing it outside of my home is going to be hell. The way the guy phrased it, he made it sound like I could take the air dam off and get it serviced, then put it back on when I am done. I don't see why a bumper would be needed though to drive on the roads. I mean, the thing is fiberglass, in an accident, it wouldn't help anything, it would just shatter.

Well I removed it today...and it took a good hour of work, but if I were to do it again, it would probably take even less time as I know now where all the screws are by heart. Good thing I watched a professional do it to my car once though. Thanks for all the help to everyone that helped me out, especially Mistrimeat.

But all I have to say is that removing a bumper cover when the bumper is fiberglass and 4 inches from the ground is much harder than it sounds.
