I am pretty sure after I get the XS turbo and a few other things that my horspower will be over 250 what should I do to reinforce the tranny and anything else that needs to be done?

The synchros will need to be strengthened, that's for sure.

What does synchros have to do with anything?

Well, it helps to have stronger synchros when you are putting down a lot of power. That's what I have read.

250hp though isn't that much to worry about a tranny. I'd get an LSD, Clutch, and Flywheel

Do you know what synchros do? What does it have anything to do with having a little more HP?

The synchros "technically" arent under any stress while the engine is under power, and fully engaged in gear. BUT they will still suffer a little during high speed shifts, like everytime someone tries to hold lift into second and accidently lets off the clutch too soon. If you hear that grinding sound, thats your synchros skipping against the coupler.

I personally think the celica synchros are a little bit weaker than they should be, I mean look at any other web boards for honda and all the other companies, you don't see this same subject brought up every damm day- they obviously don't have this problem.

WRX
a few other new cars out there are having similar syncro problems as well, I just can't remember any of them except for the WRX.

Also, you can't talk about bad quality and include Honda...I'm sorry, i don't care how bias most of the people on this board are towards Hondas, but they are very quality built cars...kinda explains why there are so many of them out there. The only tranny problem i've see w/ Honda would be there 5 speed mated to a H-22 Prelude motor...that tranny is very very weak, but its not the syncros, its the whole damn thing...

To my knowlege as a WRX owner... the tranny issue isnt as bad as people are saying. Most the people killing there trannys are not stock. Also, in the Celica community there are more GTS tranny problems than WRX tranny problems. The one thing with a WRX is you have to respect it or it will bite you back.

I thought u can't "just swap trannys" Don't you also have to swap ur ECU and other things? It's a very expensive job. Why did u buy an auto GT-S in the first place?

I am just trying to find out if I should even shoot for over 250 horsepower or not I dont need to hear about "how I bought an auto." i just need help on learing how to reinforce the tranny if I happen to go over 250 horsepower.

seriously the best thing to probably do is to either swap in a 6speed or trade in and get a 6speed. However, if you want to keep an automatic tranny contact www.levelten.com and get all the tranny parts you can find to help ground that kind of power. From what Ive heard they don't have a good rep (can any confirm that?).

Celica automatic transmision systems aren't design for performance ,racing or something related...auto is just for convenience.

My friends 95 civic turbo (t3/t4) is a 4 speed auto... he went to a regular tranny shop and they said they could upgrade his tranny to be good to 250 whp, although it has failed 2x now under warranty, and he has shelled out about 3500 dollars (just in upgrades) but apparently it is a viable way to make a decent tranny. manual has the better gear ratios, but the auto holds boost thru gear changes... so call your local shops and see what they can do for you. He still gets **** for having an automatic... but when that thing runs it beats a lot of crazy shizzle. good luck man

Trevord,
I would definately go for a transmission oil cooler first. And maybe a transmission oil temperature gauge just to make sure everything is under control. Next week, I'm going to Level Ten in New Jersey for my torque converter (higher stall speed) and a valve body recalibration. Also sending my differential to get a custom LSD. I'll let people know how these modifications work in a few weeks.
But, don't forget the trans cooler. For your info, I got the PermaCool cooler.

Trevord let me save you some time and money. You don't need to do anything to your auto tranny. I'm boosted running an auto tranny with no problems. Level Ten in Harrison works for some cars and I've heard not a good report on their conversions for our cars. I don't know where you live but if you want to spend money you don't need to call PRO-TECH Transmissions in Harriman NY area code 914. I spoke with them when I was going to do my internals to boost higher than 6 psi. They told me they could do an entire race tranny and torq. conv. for $3,500.00, but you would have to bring it to them as they won't pull or install the tranny for you. Your first concern is do your suspension call Dave Draper at West Covina Totoya and buy the Hotchkis TVS suspension upgrade. It will run you $2,600.00-$3,000.00, this way you can put down the power from your wheels to the ground. Our stock tranny will hold 250 HP without any worries and you can ask Dave that too. Good Luck!

Jersey Jay, would the hotckis sway bars and the sport camber plates be enough for suspension?

what if you have a sportshift?

Now that you have 250hp all you need to do is buy a stage three clutch, full-racing transmission, full-racing suspension, rasing super slick tires in the front, simulation tires in the back, then go take it for a spin on Apricot Hill...

sorry for the rather stupid question but for the record is it possible to change an auto tranny to a 6 speed? and what would be the general price range?

its not stupid, its a NewB question. That's ok. Do a search on your question and you'll find the answer.
