New Beetle beats Celica GT-S

I found this on the Beetle forum. I thought it was funny how this guy says that he had trouble catching the Celica at first but then he eventually passed it. Yeah...okay pal:rolleyes:

:D Sure did. I'm a lot attendant at a used car dealership and we get New Beetles all the time. In fact, I remember driving one to the gas station and commenting to myself on how slow it was. I was shocked when I got back to the lot and found out it was a 1.8T. I was like, "Damn, if that's a 1.8T then I'd hate to drive a GLX!"

been to the track this year with my NB. Just have been to busy. Last Oct was the last time I ran her on the track. Ran a 15.9 twice and a 15.8 once

all ya haters out there. dont knock a NB until you know whats done to it. remember if its a 1.8T it has just as much modability as the golf or jetta. chip, I&E will put it with more HP than a GTS with I&E. they will walk away from a GTS on the highway if modded. trust me I've raced a chipped Golf, Jetta and NB all with basically the same crap done to them and its always came out the same.

Yeah, I'm always hearing crap like this about the GT-S. People tend to hear one story and judge a car's performance off of one race. The Celica (like you all kno) is a FRIGGIN hard car to drag with right. I saw a video of a prelude racing a celica and the prelude RAPED the celica cuz the celica missed 2nd. People always see one race where the guy can't drive the 6spd and so they think celicas are slow and pieces of crap.

why dont you people actually do the ****ing research before you say something is bull****. For your information, a chipped NB with a 1.8T could keep up with the GT-S no problem, if not pull ahead. Oh yeah and you MIGHT want to look at this.

Oh whats this, a 180hp 1.8T 173 ft/lb torque, 6 spd transmission. With a chip, thats easily over 200hp and 200 ft/lb torque. Good luck trying to keep up with that. And it also has a new exhaust system on it.

Oh and another thing, a guy on the Vortex is also running low 13's in his NB.

Not exactly sure that anybody disputes any of what you said, but if you read the forum that plush posted, well you read some of the quotes and tell me that when you were drivin your celica you wouldnt' get a little worked up... like this one

That post was either a horrible driver or a GT-S or an owner that was laughin at a kid drivin his mommies beetle.
I don't care how fast they can go ....... they are ugly as sin. I can respect the fact that their car CAN go fast, but this is a Celica board,,, which some people forget, and I'm sorry but our opinions are what makes us unique and different, it is also why we ALL DRIVE DIFFERENT CARS. if nobody had an opinion this world would be a drab boring place to live.

i read the forum posts, but you dont see that crap on here as well? Check out racing stories sometimes, its quite amusing. There used to be a lovely "GT-S beats Z06" thread. All I am saying is that the same **** goes on here at this board, it's just people on here think its the best board on the planet. No one will ever accept that a car is better than theirs or that theirs is slow. Well most people wont. Ever think that the GT-S could have been an automatic? Just a outlook.

Nope no track loving yet. All of them are closed for the season. By the time I had mods done to the Jetta they closed up. The only one that is up here is New England Dragway in New Hampshire. Wed night is street night up there but its closed so I am SOL.

The car is far from done. I am just in debt cause of the Celica mods and now I am taking a semester off school to pay off the debts and get my life stabilized again. Not even sure if I am going to do any exterior mods yet or not. All I have exterior wise is my clear corners. God do I hate orange on cars.

Man, I know an automatic beetle that be spanking on Z28's, MR2's, ITR's, and GT-S'. I've seen him run numerous times, and for some reason he comes up on top.

tim.. serious ? for ya.. what do you think they did to increase the hp from 160-180 on the S?? Im thinking its a different chip, but you nkow more about VWs then me..any idea?

Larry: Supposedly what they did was just increase the stock boost levels and changed some fuel map settings in the ECU. I tried swapping a '02 ECU with my '01 to see what would happen and there were no marginal gains. The engine is the exact same and they did not do anything to the internals or what not. It has to be different boost settings in the ECU.

Sorry if I started a big dispute in here - that's not what I intended. I was just commenting on this BS story I found on the Beetle board. I didn't mean to come off like I was making fun of the Beetle or anything.

Oh, by the way, that 180 HP Turbo S Beetle is...not that fast. A friend of mine got to test drive one and he came away saying that it's not a heck of a lot faster than a 1.8T. In fact, I've seen 0-60 acceleration times on this car posted as high as 7.6 seconds. No, that's not that great. But, that's nothing a chip won't cure ;)

Hell, my Jetta wasnt THAT fast to start, it's a '01 so its the 150hp engine, but now its quick as hell.
