i had a bet with a friend of mine regards to what is faster
in stock

GTS - 6 spd
GTS - Auto ( i have auto )

and i know that 6 spd is around 2 sec faster in quater mile than Auto

but my friend is saying that Auto is faster than 6 spd cause there is no way that human can shift faster than machine..

so..

i need 10 people to prove him wrong..
and it will help if you posted some of your quater mile time

but remember that this is A STOCK 6spd VS STOCK AUTO

and am going to print this fourm as a proof ...so what ever you say then that's what my friend will read

tell your friend he is a crackhead....j/k, 6 speed of course, not because of how fast a "human" can shift, but because our damn slushbox robs so much power from the engine, the 6 speed loses less power in the drivetrain.....so my vote the 6speed is faster.

I know where your friend THOUGHT he was going...yeah in drag cars / modded cars etc an Auto works better (ie the shift factor). As stated above the loss of power from the drivetrain / transmission on an auto is sick. It's been proven over and over.

I love my GTS-Auto and all, but there is no way in hell it can out-race a 6spd (everything being the same / driver / stock cars) in ANY race. Auto's don't cut it. Your friend should educate himself before making such claims and bets.

Not that I'm trying to open a can of worms here but, a good driver in a stock GT 5spd can beat the times of a GT-S Auto. The GT-S auto not only has power robbed by the trans. but the added weight ratio drags the car down even further. I may be wrong but, I don't know of any Mid 15 second Auto GT-S's and I know for a fact that a stock 5spd with a good driver can achieve that...

I was talking about everything the same, except the tranny. Same driver, same time of day, same temp, same road, same underwear. In a vacuum. Sadly, it probably is too close to call btwn 5spd / Auto-GTS. but the point is proven.

also the gearing in the gt-s auto drops way below the 6000rpm on each shift. i have seen videos of this and i believe gt-s auto owner have talked about it. so with a good 6 speed driver the auto will lose in a 1/4 run. although the auto looks strong on the highway runs. correct me if im wrong...

I would be willing to race any auto GT-S willing to put their money where their mouth is. From a stop or from a roll. Either way the results are the same. Full interior too. :D

Try to explain to your friend that the Celica has two camshaft profiles in it, and the first cam is profiled for economy and the second cam is more geared for high rpm power building. The real reason a 6 speed is so much faster than the automatic is because the automatic has only 4 gears as opposed to the 6 in the GTS manual. This allows the 6 speed to be on the high rpm power building cam throughout an entire race while the auto 4 speed is in the economy cam for probably half the race.

If the auto celica came with a six speed automatic it very well may be a totally different story. The automatic would still rob more power than the manual and the manual would have a big advantage launching their car, but the Celica is a difficult car to drive effectivly in the 1/4 mile. Despite the inherent dissavantages a six speed auto may consistantly outrun most 6 speed manual drivers. Of course, a good 6 speed manual driver would still beat the auto 6 speed driver, but how many of thoes are really out there? :D

your friend is probably getting confused between the regular automatic trans and the automatic F1 type shifter that the Ferrari 355 and new M3 have. They F1 type shifter (they usually have paddles behind the steering wheel to change gears) are pretty much a clutchless manual transmission... but they're only clutchless from the drivers point of view. They're like a regular manual transmission that's controlled by the computer. Hydroloics are used to control the clutch and change gears, u just tell it when to shift. These transmissions can actually shifter faster than any human can. The auto in the celica has 2 less gears than the 6spd and caused more drivetrain power loss. Therefore it's much slower. A well built auto can keep up with a manual in some cases tho. For example, auto Supras do well in drad racing.

The only car I ever saw that was faster with the autmatic than the manuel was the Porsche 928. Back in the early to mid 80's Car & Driver or Road & Track did a comparison of the two. The automatic was .2 or .4 seconds faster (as I recall....it was a long time ago). I was shocked to say the least. It's hard to say they they didn't know how to drive the cars, because it's what those guys do for a living.

I can beat a GTS auto in my 5speed GT all day long. No way will an auto be faster than a stick. Unless the auto had some kind of drag shifter (think thats what its called) then no way:D

the auto supra tt's are faster than the 6sp supratt's.... if that helps.
