ya, the 1-2 shift is a little tricky cause you sometimes hit the reverse gate if you slide the shifter against the left side of the box. If you put your hand over the shifter so it is in your palm almost and keep you elbow to the right of the drink holders, then you should keep from rubbing the side walls and the reverse gate. This goes for the 3-4 shift as well, but do just the opposite with you elbows for the 2-3 and 4-5 shifts...get it? Here ya go, Ill draw a picture of it
1st 3rd 5th
\ / \ / \
2nd 4th 6th
HAHA, like my ****ty picture, well, the / and \ represent the angle at which your right arm should be during those particular shifts. This will help alot with the misshift problem from 3rd to 4th too which is a way bigger deal than hitting the reverse gate obviously

use open-hand shifting. do not use your thumb and grip around shifter. Put pressure on front right of the shifter, and just use your hand to cup the shifter. Pull back left. not straight back, back left. This will work fine if you shift open-handed.
Gripping it all the way around, and being tensed up can make you shift into nowhere. I had this problem when doin auto-x runs my first time till one of of the guys running it told me to shift open handed.

Just make sure that in your hast you push the cluch all the way in or at least enough to let it disengage for that split second put it in let the cluch out and go, just don't do the famous 3rd to 2nd by many drivers that like to throw the stick around... also I agree that rev slot is tricky

All the times that I missed the 1-2 shift was when I got too excited and slammed the shifter. When I play it cool and relaxed, I just shift it nice and quick and I never miss it.
also
do you guys hold the shift job with your hand above it (like holding a walking cane?) or hold it around its side (like a joystick)?
