View Full Version : The more I read, the less I like the Matrix

So, R&T and C&D both have Matrix/Vibe write ups this month.

The biggest tidbit worth mentioning that I saw is the following

The AWD versions will only be available with an automatic transmission.

Makes it worthless as a performance car doesn't it? The FWD versions are als NOT independent rear suspension (Corolla platform), so that diminishes their value.

On the other hand, they look to have a cool set of gadgets that we *can* use. 8200 RPM redline ECU, a nice set of factory 17 inch wheels that should be avalable for us to bolt up, and it looks like the Matrix will have an optional DVD/GPS nav system. Hopefully it integrates into the standard Toyota double DIN opening.

uhh we share the same platform as the corolla.. We handle great. The rear suspension on the chassis side is near identical to the Celica. So there are already companies (Hotchkis, TRD, Progress Group) building coil over kits for the Matrix that will perform like a champ. The turbo kit for the GT-S is already modified to work on the Matrix as is shown on SCC. This car will be a kick ass Utility/Sport's car at an affordable price. If I didn't ready have my Celica I would have bought this to haul the son and wife around. If my biz takes off I'll be buying one to haul parts around and show off.

mmmmmm.... dvd/gps system.... droool....

The matrix doesn't look too bad, but like you said, it's definatly not the performance beast it could be.

I know my bro is thinking of getting one - he's a married man looking for something useful and sporty. Looks like he's the perfect demographic. I just hope he lets me double check his option packages (for some reason the difference between alloy wheels and hub caps don't register with him).

The Matrix is a nice concept. However, the AWD version makes little sense. What good is AWD if the engine is only pushing 123 hp. With the big drivetrain losses caused by the AWD, that car might not even make it up the driveway.;)

Has anyone read or heard from a credible source why they are not making an awd version with the higher output engine? It seems to me that would be a very popular combination.

I don't agree. The 2ZZ engine would be a HORRIBLE match with the AWD system. No torque. You don't see many high revving, low torque engines with AWD systems for a reason. I think the low output engine that is going with the AWD on the Matrix has nearly the same torque as the 2ZZ engine. It would be a waste to put the high output engine on that system. Maybe if the 2ZZ had 180 ft lbs, it might be a different story.

hadn't thought of that. :)

The Celica and Corolla may share some platform similarities, but the matrix is a SOLID rear axle. That IS NOT independent rear suspension (the AWD one gets a real independent rear suspension).

Great for the ricers, now you can absolutely SLAM the rear and without seeing any camber changes. But in a corner, you don't get any camber changes either. Not to mention the ride qualit isn't as good (theoretically).

Yes, slap a big sway bar on the ass end and it will rotate, but it still won't dance like the Celica.

My biggest beef is the lack of a manual tranny with the AWD version.

racinjason: not to be a grinch or anything, but maybe we should wait to see if anyone can actually purchase the turbo kit for the matrix, i mean, u said the turbo kit for the gts had already been modified to work with the matrix, true, but has there been anyone, except for the Alt Celica, with that turbo kit for the gts? hope the same doesn't hold true for the matrix if that's the case.

The Matrix never struck me as being performance minded. Just kind of a zippy, yet practical car.

It is beyond me how auto manufactures are now jumping on the wagon trend...we need more two door hatchbacks.

Did the MP3 and Protege5 start this?

Car & Driver tested the Vibe GT & got 0-60 in 7.3/ qtr mile in 15.7.

Sport Compact Car did it in the 0-60 in 9 seconds and high 16's in the qtr mile.

Why so much of a difference, testing the same car, different skin?

Gee, kind of like a Honda Civic, yet we ended up with an Integra Type R made from the exact same car.

I intended no similiarities between the Matrix and the Celica. I just think people were expecting performance based on the engine the Matrix has. However, what makes the Celica perform well with that engine is the light weight. The Matrix is not going that route. It just seemed that you were expecting more performance out of the Matrix that it appears they intended. It looks like a fun car if you're in the market for something of that type. At least the Integra Type R and the Civic don't share the same engine.

I don't think it's really fair that the Matrix be viewed for lack of engine performance. The Matrix I think is to be a neat looking family car. I mean you don't need 180+ hp to go down to the market or race through traffic at 120mph just to get the kids to soccer practice. True SCC showed XS Engineering with turbo charged Matrix, but your average demographic with probably buying the lower trim. Even with the AWD may even look appealing as an option, but to the average run of the mill buyer, that's all they see AWD, not 123hp. With the automatic thrown in, makes it more convient to adjust that DVD for the kids or something.

Just my opinion.
