I am not sure if we need to upshift to 6th gear driving around the city. A friend of mine told me it would hurt the gearbox if one upshifted to 6th gear under 100km/h. I don't think that's the case. Well, I usually upshift to 6th gear when I am doing 70km/h + on highway, and I still get very good torque from the engine.

So what advice would you guys have for me ??

wow someone in japan that has a new celica? i thought the 2k+ celica's in japan were thought of as **** lol. I bet it is alot cheaper over thier.

but to answer your question. I belieave that u shouldn't shift to the next gear intill u hit 4000 or more RPMS. Don't ask me why i could not explain why i only been into cars/and car engines as a hobby for 8 months but i am learning...

don't quote me but that my $0.02

You can put it in sixth whenever you want as long as it doesn't stall the engine. I usually put it in sixth at 50mph.

Actually, you should probably keep it in 6th gear when you reach your cruising speed as long as it is at 2,000rpms or higher. Once you slow down to a slower speed that yeilds an rpm lower than 2,000 you should downshift into the next gear.

The reason I say 2,000 rpm is because I used to own an auto GTS before my 6 speed GTS. The auto transmtion would hold itself in its highest gear at rpm speeds as low as 2,000. You would be in 4th gear when you were going only around 25mph. If the automatic holds the gear like this it must not be bad for the engine. If you keep the engine running at higher rpm's you will just be wasting your gas and making your engine work harder.

Ummmm... Grab an Atlas...

Last time I checked, HongKong belonged to China (since the British lost their lease...)

:D Yes Hong Kong belongs to China from 7/1/199 onwards.

Celica SS-2 (Celica GTS) isn't popular in Hong Kong and Japan. The fact is, most people who love high performance cars will turn to Honda Type-R series, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. and the like. You can tell with 190 horses engine (10 more horses for Japanese version, the one I am driving), there are certainly many better choices in Japan such as Accord Euro R (220 horses). And in a popular video 'Best Motoring', in which all cars are test driven by popular professional racers, 7th generation of Celica doesn't gain high ratings. Even in a circuit test, Celica lost out to Civic Type R, Honda S2000 and Integra Type R. The conclusion is, if racing is part of your life, pick Honda Type R series. But I am not sure if Type R series is on sale in the States.

Of course when it comes to the look, Celica must win.

The Celica I am driving is the highest grades among three in Japan. Mine is equipped with key-control air-con system. Plus, it is installed with Toyota's 'Super Strut Suspension'.

holymoly, man, care to post pics so I can drool over her ? a Celica in the Far East, I thought they don't sell it there. which part are you from ? I grew up in North Point and I thought it's close to impossible to drive let alone sports cars like celis in HK......I bet you pay the car price for the insurance too huh. hehe :D

Okay, most people that just answered this thread were WRONG.

"...but to answer your question. I belieave that u shouldn't shift to the next gear intill u hit 4000 or more RPMS. Don't ask me why i could not explain why i only been into cars/and car engines as a hobby for 8 months but i am learning... "

What? Wrong.

Bling! You win the door prize.

Yes, you can upshift into 6th gear at any speed so long as there is enough torque to pull the flywheel to turn the wheels, and turn the engine too (otherwise you would stall out).

You could upshift into 6th gear going 15mph if you wanted to! You would have like 14 ft.-lbs. of torque, but you could!

Yes, but it is possable to damage your car by driving in the tallest gear at too low a speed. It will put a lot of load on the engine which could eventually result in a pinging sound or over heat your car...

I can easily cruise at 35-40 in town in 6th with no problem.

Right. If you can tell me how this would overheat my car, I'll send you a PayPal of $2 in your name right now (or whenever I come back to this post). Pinging? No, that won't result in pinging or detonation. Pinging and "deto" usually happens when an engine is running a completely different (or somewhat different) combustion ratio than what the internals were designed for. Bascically if you're running to much air to fuel, or LEAN, that's when you will have a detonated engine.

But how in the Good God's name will running a car in final gear at lets say 20mph hurt my car? Load on the engine? There's always a load on the engine. If you need additional torque to climb an incline or pass the Honda Civic Si next to you, you can downshift a gear or two to rise engine speeds to where you need them to make maximum gains at a given RPM. Again, I'll give you $2, if you can tell me why. Just don't bullsh*t your answer, because if you do, then you'll owe me $2 for wasting my time and Larry's server's space.

Heheehe.

bullsh*t my answer? It says that it will cause pinging right on page 94 of the cars owners manual...
