View Full Version : It's official, this car suck....
...in the snow. I might as well go down to Home Depot, buy some lumber, and make a bobsled out of this thing. I think the chief factors in the fact that this car sucks big sloppy monkey d!ck in the snow is it's light weight and these God awfull Yokes. They are great OEM performance tires but they are just plain horrible in the snow. Oh well, I'll probaly be getting new tires in the spring (Michelin Pilot Sports) and then for next winter get some snow tires, like the Blizaks or whatever they are called.

It's ALL in the tires! Three things for winter driving...
1. snow tires
2. snow tires
3. snow tires!!!!
Would you go to the track to compete riding on studded, deep lug snow tires? Didn't think so...so don't go winter driving on performance radials!
Mine is a light ass rwd torque mine, but with a set narrower, higher profile Blizzak snow tires (on a set of smaller diameter wheels) it gets around just fine in the kind of conditions below...

Now Me I enjoy the challenge of driving a light weight car with less than "optimum" tires in the snow but then again on the days I do work I leave at 5am. It's kind of like a playground after a nice snow.

that's one thing i don't miss about living in the east coast. i get to drive her 365 days of the year..
Larry, I hate to say it but he has U beat. :) Look at how deep the snow is right beside his car. It looks like that where I am. I am in Vermont. We had 1 ft on the ground before this week and it has snowed every day this week.
I have a set of Nokian snow tires and I have had no trouble whatsoever getting around in the snow. Tires really are the most important factor. The stock Yoko's are not rated for snow so of course they will suck. I am tired of people saying this car sucks in the snow. ANY car would suck with the stock yoko's we have. In fact our car has such low torque that it makes it easier to take off from a stop in slippery conditions without losing traction. I bet that is the first time anyone has looked at the low torque as a positive :)
P.S. I would rather have higher torque and more wheelspin

But we are getting the Evo VIII, not VII, according to the latest Autoweek. So what that means, is that they will make it uglier than hell, kind of like the Impreza.
Anyway, those stock Yokos suck ass for anything but dry weather. Hence the term summer tires. I think the lightness of the car is good and bad. It doesn't take much effort to get it moving or stopping because it is light. But, when you are moving, you don't have that weight to hold you down to the road. I had my baby in the garage until the snow stopped, but I had to go out an buy wings and beer for the Eagles game. And they WON!!!!!! GO EAGLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Umm, no. I drive my GT-S everyday here in the great frozen north and it works fine. My boss doesn't even use the traction control on his M3 ever, and its a 300+ hp RWD. The idea that you need a large, wasteful vehicle to get around in the snow is ridiculous and uninformed. SUV's perform far worse than cars in most conditions, including most winter roads.
Those who have stock yoko A680s take a look at the side. See how there's no "snowflake in the mountain" logo? That's cause they aren't winter tires. In fact, the arent even all-seasons! The GT-S cars are equipped with summer only tires. When I bought mine, it came with a big warning not to drive it in snow ever without changing the tires. I got some Pirelli 210 Snowsports for the winter, and tada: traction!

I bought some 17" alloy wheels with B.F Goodrich all-season tires for my L. I'm not really planning on driving it in the snow, but I commute 100 miles a day and no doubt there will be a time when I will find myself staring at snow in it. I'll leave the all-seasons on for a few months just in case. The Eagle F1's are definitely NOT mud & snow rated tires.
I'll have to take some pics. Hopefully it won't look too funny. 17" alloys isn't too much of a part from 18"'s.

Everyone says that, but your car can be made to go just as fast, just no jumping out in front of everyone at line:(
Thinking about buying a used GSX or RSX Type-S or R when it comes out....not sure which

I'm not sure about previous years and in the states, but here in canada, the GTS comes with performance tires(summer tires) so maybe thats why you guys with GTSes have a rough time in the snow..

Man I drove the other day on the parkway... I saw 2 different celicas at 2 diff. times... one had a newly messed up front and the other was a GT which looks like it got rear ended cause it had no bumper... are they any of the guys on this site.....
anyway dont drive your celi in the snow unless you got the right tires.. its suicide otherwise.. I was in and at one point i had to lock the differentials so that i could get out of some of the messes that the snow plows left behind.

This is my first winter (In Northern Ontario, Canada) with my '02 GT...I agree with stock "All-Season Tires" it is difficult to drive. The worst situation I find is when the road has snow piled in the middle and between your tires. When you try to cross it, the car almost loses control. Had a few close calls...always managed to keep it on the road.
I'm used to winter driving and I find as long as you realize the limitations during winter, it's managable. I just take it slow and leave lots of room to stop. I also keep the RPM's low when starting off.
What's with the front wheel wells? I can't get rid of the snow behind the front tires!

Instead of starting a new thread I'm going to bump this one after doing a search...
Basically it's snowed like a mofo up here (Alberta, Canada)....like almost 20 cm's a day. I am on stock tires right now. I can get around fine on the flats, but up hills I can't get up...including my driveway which is really steep. I always have to shovel the snow before I can park it in the garage.
Anyways....how will the Celi perform in deep snow with winter tires. Sure a winter tire will be good in the flat, but I need to know if any of you guys have driven in relatively deep snow before the ploughs clear the roads. Basically I don't want to spend 800 on snow tires only to have them be worthless. I had to ditch the Celi twice last week because I couldn't get out of my neighborhood as the plows don't get here for a couple of days and it's hilly here.
I just can't see how snow tires would make driving possible in these conditions when now it is impossible. The car is just too light I think regardless of tire choice.
Thanks

first off, drew, it took you this long to realize that the stock yoke's stink in the winter? fock, after the first winter with the celi ('99) on the stock yokes, i realized my mistake. first hint of snow for 2k i went out and bought some snows ...
sausage - the car will do just fine in deep snow with snow tires...hell, when i drove up north to ski, i had no problems...i'm just waiting for a crapload of snow now to see how the car does while being kitted and lowered

Sausage25ca,
Snow tires make a HUGE difference for traction, but if the snow is deep and HEAVY (wet), you still might have some difficulty because you bottom out due to low ground clearance. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I haven't driven through much snow on my new snow tires this year, as we haven't had any snow. In fact, the ground is still bare! But, in the past, I've been able to go through 12" deep LIGHT (powder) without a hitch on the stock tires, but I've also had trouble in 2" of wet. Snow tires will grip much better than stock, but if the snow is heavy AND deep, you'd better stay home.

Holy cow....I brought this topic from the dead....I thought it was Jan 03, but yeah you're right it's from Jan 02.
Anyways, hopefully I can get through the next six weeks or so of winter up here. It sucks so bad basically not being able to drive the car properly for half the year and driving like a granny.
Seriously I'll keep the Celi for next summer, but I think I might get an XTerra going into next winter....even with winter tires I wouldn't feel too safe taking a highway trip to the mountains.
