I'm brand new at this whole car audio thing. I really need some help please. Ok, this is basically what I know I need for a system.
Head Unit
Receiver
Amp
Speakers/Sub
I can handle the last three. However, I have a major question about the first one. I'm interested in the Clarion VRX935VD. It's Clarion's premier unit and is an AM/FM/DVD player with CD-DVD changer control, and 7" touch panel LCD. Here's a link and here's a pic:

Here's what I don't know.
What else do I need besides this? I have no idea regarding mobile DVD units. Do I need an external decoder? Do I need a receiver or an amplifier? Could I just put this in and it would work without anything else, even though it would not be taking advantage of its full capabilities? Lastly, is this the size of what's referred to as a Single DIN?
PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I have last year's model, the VRX925VD. I have only that installed, and haven't worked on the rest of the system... it works fine enough with the stock speakers/amp. I'm also using a Soundgate OEM4A interface ( http://www.soundgate.com/products/factory/oem.htm ) to utilize the stock amp.

TOO funny! I LITERALLY just purchased one this morning!!! I'm looking at it right now..can't wait to get it in!
I know next to nothing myself, but from what I understand, you need not buy anything else to make it work(i.e. "another receiver or amplifier")
PM Baldhead_J, he's got it set up currently.
I plan on taking this bad boy to BestBuy tomorrow afternoon. I opened up the box, looked at ALL the wires,etc...and quickly put it all back in :) I've since, been sitting in rocking chair, just cradling and stroking the head unit in my lap......it's gorgeous.
That reminds me..I have a question myself....... (look for new thread;))

this is funny, im by no means an audio guru, but since no ones around to give you the expert answers, i'll give you the basics.
yes that's a single DIN. it essentially fills half of the space where the stock stereo is, because that is a double din (duh). you will need an installation kit to fill up the other half below your single DIN unit, and prolly a harness to connect the wires. but some people have just chopped and spliced. the head unit generally is a built-in receiver. and you dont need a decoder. altho i think 5.1 dts decoders are sold separately if you want the true digital surround experience in the car. which most people prolly would want if they already took the step to install a screen inside. unless you were jus goin for looks.
as far as amps and speakers and a subwoofer. you dont need those, but they would be nice to have to sound good. our stock system is pretty decent tho. youre prolly gonna look at changing em down the line, and it would be easy on the installer to do it all in one crack, but yeah it costs a lot. so you can always wait till you have the cash and upgrade one at a time. the only thing you might wanna look into is getting an amp IF you have the toyota premium sound system in the car. basically because the stock amp they give you is a piece of crap. and you have to bypass it to avoid gettin engine noise or other distortion from spewing out your speakers. but bypassing does hinder the SQ. you could get a signal level converter like one from soundgate like QWKsilvr808 has but it's pretty expensive and you might wanna jus consider applying that money to an amp. as for me im jus living with the damn engine noise until i have enough money to upgrade other sound stuff. it's pretty unbearable but since i already have some stuff waiting to be installed, i dont wanna invest in the converter.

oh and yeah, if you havent figured it out already, you would not be taking advantage of the unit's capabilities. it would work fine, but a powerful amp and nice quality speakers will definitely blow you away :D

lol, I was just gonna say, this would be overkill for anyone that's gonna use a harness to connect this to the factory amp...all the dobly digital blah blah is useless unless you're going straight from the headunit to the speakers and aftermarket amp...I think that using the harness to connect to the factory amp turns the wattage down so the factory amp can use the signal...
Correct me if I'm wrong guys...

You guys are gonna wanna sleep in your car every night..... I just got mine in the other day.
I had a problem w/ mine, but went back to seller and swapped out just the head unit itself.......PERFECT......
As Baldhead told me last week(and now I know first hand)...this is gonna make your car FUN to drive.....the coolest thing I've done to my baby yet('till I turbo of course)
