ok guys i need ur help again..

with this new webhost we are limited to 30gigs of bandwith per month.. thats ALOT of traffic..well guess what.. i just ran the stats program and we hit over 6gigs in 5 days.. thats not good especially over the weekend becuase thats when the site is as its slowest.. so i need to start figuring out a way to get everything to lower the bandwith issues without cutting back on the amount of posts.. signatures are a large part.. sig files add up REALLY fast.. so for now on there is a 20k size limit on signature files.. please modify your signature now when your reading this so i can cut back on the bandwith ASAP..

Thanks
Larry D

How about *no* sigs. Or text sigs only. Even better, text sigs that are limited to 3 lines or less.

umm. just don't host sigs.... they should reside on a server of the user, thuswise it will not be part of your bandwidth

Yup, as long as your sigs reside on a server other than newcelica.org it won't eat up the bandwidth of the site. Guess that means its time for some guys to sign up on geocities or yahoo and what-not to outsource their sigs.

cool. so i suppose hosting from imagestation is a-ok

another thing i suggest to save on bandwidth would be to disable file uploads... every upload and every view counts..

r u sure about that?? if thats the truth then can u think of a reason we are hitting 6gigs of traffic that fast?

Yeah.. they have a point. There's no reason to come down on the sigs unless you are hosting them, which is a bad idea in itself..

well im not hosting them but i thought since the traffic was being pulled through the site it would count against me.. i wish i could fiugre it out..

Here is my sig html off the source of this webpage:

img src="http://www.erols.com/bholder/sig.jpg" border="0" alt=""

The actual picture is being sent from erols.com, but being displayed on your webpage, no bandwidth from the sig is coming through your server.

With such a big site like yours larry, I would be always looking at my logs to catch other sites linking to files on my server. People are always stealing the pics and video's on my website.. so I go in there and rename the pics and change the links when it gets too out of control.

hmm.. that makes sense.. guess ill have to look more in depth to that stats

plus the size of the ads might make a difference... avatars, picture gallery, etc, etc..

I'm positive that if it's not on your server, it will not count for your bandwidth (except for the html pointing to a sig of course)

another thing that could be done would be to possibly have things more text based like the buttons up top and whatnot..

well see what im trying to figure out is I know of other sites runing same forum with bout same activity and members and they have no bandwith issues at all..

you on a shared server? maybe your bandwidth's being sucked from another site on the server

larryd

yes i am on a shared server but the bandwith stats i see are only coming from my site

maybe try disabling sigs for a day and check you stats? That could eliminate any concerns.

Yep... you'll have to get a picture of a real celi - not an HPI RC car. :)

And since when did NC.org host the sigs? I thought everyone hosted their own! Arrgh... now that's bandwidth suckin. :)

I will have to check my logs since all you guys are hoggin my bandwidth for my sig now. :)
