got my center channel speaker for my ride..putting it right under the head unit

but yeah, i'm still an idiot so I need help :) The directions are pretty much straight forward, however..just 1 questions. There's no "center channel" output on my headunit/brain for the headunit...do i just hook up to an "audio out"?? does it matter?

I just downloaded the manual and took a peek. It looks like what you have (Clarion SRK5) is an amp and speaker that fits in 1/2 DIN space. It doesn't appear to have the center channel processor built-in. From the wiring diagram, it shows to plug the unit into the "Center Audio Output", which is a white RCA. I think in order for this center channel to be a true 5.1 center channel, you need a processor.

Or, if you don't care enough about it, you could run a "Y" connector on the RCA line for the rears into this center channel. That way you can fade it. But this way won't give you a true center channel.

I could be wrong, but that's is what I get from the directions (all 2 pages of it).

what about the 5.1 DSP?
my eclipse dsp has a built in amp/output for the center channel speaker.

Yeah Skamikaze, that would work then. Basically all you need is a center channel output (either RCA or pre-amplified).

The only thing I don't get about car audio is the size of the center channels they sell. In home audio, you need your center channel to be at least the size of the left and right speakers. The center channel plays the most material. Yet in the car world, they have small center units. :ugh: When I build my center channel, I'm planning on using at least a 5.25" speaker.

always wondered the same thing...the largest ive seen ever was 4in. but most out there are around half that size. puzzling...

why would they sell it w/out a built in...could the processor be part of the seperate amp? Yeah..fug it..i don't even know what i'm talking about...what IS the processor?

the center channel speaker is for 5.1 dolby dts surround sound systems. you need a separate processor to achieve this for you system. jus like how your need a separate unit for a dts decoder at home. they have a couple sets rca outs on a tv, but nothing more. so for the car stereos, seems kinda useless to have an output for a center channel speaker when it wont be utilized for it's purpose using just a regular head unit...so that's prolly why the outputs are on the digital processor. if you want to add the center channel speaker now, you could do what curt said, but all youre really doing is adding another tiny speaker with no special purpose.

sooo...in essence...it's just "another speaker" unless I can get a dts processor? Got a link for what i'd need?

screw it..too much junk..gonna run out of room to mount all this sh!t..I'll settle for just "another speaker" in my dash

i dunno man, if i were you, id up the ante and invest in the 5.1 dsp, im sure youll be blown away by the sound quality, especially if you plan on upgrading the rest of your system (amp speakers subs - looks like you jus might get these from lookin at the other post) down the line. there should be enough places to mount everything. i think the brain and dsp would be able to squeeze together under the same seat (if that's where the brain is right now). think of it as a difference between mono and stereo, or a tape and a CD... but it's your call!

hmm..i might just go somewhere, tell 'em what I want to do, and say "do it" and cough up the $$...my headunit's brain is under my driver's seat..not much room for much more....My tv tuner and my future center channel speaker amp is under my passenger(no more room under each....

HOWEVER, my back seats are out....doing a false floor from back of front seats to the rear strut bar....may just mount the amp(s) and dps there.

that's right, i forgot about your TV tuner. you might wanna look into seeing if the dsp has a built in center channel speaker amp, mines does. also even if you need a separate center channel amp, it shouldnt be big cuz it doesnt need a whole lotta power and should be able to fit somewhere under/behind the dash. (maybe like where the stock amp is)

let me display my stoopidity once more...does my stock gt auto stereo even HAVE a stock amp??

which dsp do you have?

skamikaze

hmmm, ok yeah maybe you dont have the stock amp, but if youve seen someone who does, it's mounted behind the dash, on against the passenger side front fender next to the glovebox.
as for my dsp, i have the eclipse 39011, but it's specifically meant for eclipse headunits, it connects with this big ass cable i dont think you can use it with other brand headunits.

Well center channel in Home audio is mainly for voices and a few direct center effects, with car audio I'm sure since your a few feet away it doesn't nearly need to be as big, it's not doing much mid range or bass either.
