How do I do this to my dash? Where can I buy it at and does it last for a good while?

Take it out, Sand it, Prime it, Paint it and clear coat it...Really quite simple

I don't mean the silver part. I'm mean the black plastic dash. If I sand it it will look like the plastic under my hood that I f*cked up majorly trying to paint.
Isn't it a dye?

SEM vinyl dye or DupliColor vinyl spray.
Remove parts, sand with 600 grit sandpaper wash with dishwashing detergent, dry, paint, reinstall.

Thanks. That makes more sense.
Is this paint at PepBoys or Autozone?
Mistrimeat

SEM can only be bought online or if you're lucky, an independant retailer may carry it. DupliColor can be purchased at AutoZone, PepBoys, WalMart, etc.

That's what I was talking about....I just added clearcoat if you want a glossy finish

Is Duplicolor just as good as SEM?
Mistrimeat
05-16-2003, 09:45 AM
Just about the same I guess. Only reason I didnt use SEM is because they didnt have Flat black, only Satin. I didnt want ANY shininess on my dash so it would look factory.

Damn!
Sand with 600 grit paper, how hard should I sand? Wash with dish washer liquid, dry and paint. How many cotes of paint? This is gonna be my Sunday project. Weather permitting.

Lightly sand just to remove any surface residue from Armor All or other cleaning chemicals. Dont try and sand down the texture so its smooth.
4-5 coats is enough.
Use a hairdryer to dry between coats.

Can't anyone use the search function anymore, the board's getting clogged up with the same questions over and over again... This was a MAJOR topic not 2 weeks ago...
This isn't a sunday project, it's gonna take time, if you rush it, it's gonna look like ****. Taking the dash out is a bitch and a half, actually putting it back in is. Unless you have the time and patience I would not recommend the amateur attempting this. If you wanna just tape off the dash, then good luck to ya, you're gonna have a hell of a time trying to spray everything evenly.
Search.

No matter how unevenly you spray it (as long as it doesn't sag), it will flatten out and look like one smooth layer. If you do get sags, they will eventually even out as the dye cures. I taped/tarped off nate22's dash and it came out fine.

I'm not a amateur. I've taken my dash out twice. Along with all the plastics in my car so I could put my stereo in. I have the whole day and another person to help me get this done. So yeah, I can have it done in one day.

amen...search!
mistri...lucky ass....i have no clue when i can do this..cuz i don't have a back up car...and im gonna work during the summer probably 6 days a week. Can this be done in one day? The probalem for me isn' the removal of the plastics...its the spraying and the waiting for it to set and dry...i want it to be done right the first time (i'm anal like that)...
so what's the final forumla to doing this?
1) Remove all plastics
2) Sand with 600 grit paper
3) Heat it up as you spray w/ a light coat
5) let it set for 15-20 min
6) sand again? <- ionno why someone recommended this but maybe you gotta...
7) heat it up...spray another coat
8) let it sit for 15-20
9) do 7/8 like 5 times...
then put it in?

oh by the way, i found a dupli-color spray sunbeam silver that matched the color of the car but the lady i spoke to said not to use that spray paint since it would peel? not sure whether she knew what she was talking about but thought i mentioned that since that silver was really close to the liquid silver color...

It is PPG paint, painted 1D0 silver metallic, which is the exact color of the outside of my car. It was done by a body shop. It was also clearcoated, so it looks just like a factory peice. I wouldnt recommend trying to spray paint it. It will never look as good as a professional job.

GTS-6 It probably will chip, flake, or peel unless you use some flexible surfac/plastic primer and sand the surface of the plastic well. Regular primer won't work because the plastic can bend pretty easily. I used some Duplicolor paint on my friend's engine bay plastics using this method, and it's still on almost a year later.

search "dye interior". this was a huge topic a few weeks ago. There is a whole lot of info on this site about this. It got me to look into the idea. I'm gonna buy SEM and dye my interior soon.

I'm sore all over and have a nice sunburn on the back of my neck but I got it done yesterday. I'm not completely done because there are 3 pieces in the trunk that my dad didn't sand right and the pain didn't adhere. I forgot how much of a pain in the ass it is to get the dash out and back in.
Now that I've done it I wish that I hadn't had done it. Sitting in the car just doesn't feel right. I'm not comfortable. I feel like I can't touch anything. It's got me nervous about the CAI, cf hood, strut bar, and body kit I have on the way. I think I'm just scared that I'll goof something up. I'll give the paint a good week to sit in the sun and hopefully I'll start to feel a little more comfortable when I can run my nails across it and I don't chip paint off or leave deap gashes.
Mistri, did you kinda feel odd after you put all the pieces back? Like you couldn't touch anything because you were afraid you just ruined your interior?
And for the amount of money I spent on paint I could have just bought the interior pieces of an '03 Celica.

Nah, I was more worried about the passengers hitting it with their shoe, rings, watch, etc...but that hasn't happened yet. You just have to use a little extra effort when entering/exiting. Mine has held up really well, too. Only scratches are on the drivers side door sill where my foot hits it in the same place every time I get in/out of the car. Otherwise it looks just like it did the day I painted it. Touch ups are really easy, though. The paint blends right in no matter how much time has passed between coats. I never carry anything in the car, so Im not worried about scratching things up.

I think I'll get more comfortable with it in a week or two. My nerves are that it isn't going to hold up. Once I see that is holding up well I won't worry as much about it anymore.

Finally found some Krylon Fusion! Gonna test it out tonight. It says it takes a week to become fully chip resistant. Otherwise, the instrutctions remind me a lot of how you use vinyl dye. I'll put up a review soon.
