anyone know of any radar detectors that you dont have to have on your front windshield? my friend had a 96 covrvette and the radar detector was mounted by the drivers right knee. so i know these types exist. any positive/informative input is appreciated.

BEL makes one that you can mount behind the bumper or grill, and the actual receiver unit can be placed anywhere you want, dosent have to be visible. A friend of mine has one mounted in his Lightning.

Someone else also makes one (might be K40), the brand name escapes me at the moment.

I have been thinking it would be cool to have a custom mount made inside the controls for the cabin light/moon roof so you could mount the radar detector inside....

I was planning to mount one in the area behind where the factory clock goes, but in such a way that you could see the indicator lights through the tinted peice. I even had the clock all taken apart, just never got around to buying the radar. :/

It's perfectly legal in CA. Radar Jammers are illegal everywhere in the U.S though (as far as I know).

Radar detectors are LEGAL in CA, just not radar or laser jammers (which don't work anyway).

To address the original question by the original poster, you can easily hard-wire the unit high up on the windshield near the mirror (or even above the mirror) to make it less conspicuous.

They don't do you any good anyway. I have a friend who showed me how their radar guns work. The cops have you. The only way a radar detector is useful is if the cop shoots another car that's further ahead of you and it gives you time to slow down. If they worked so well then why do they let you buy them? Because they only help you out a little bit.

im only asking because my mom wants to buy one for my dad. she doesnt want it mounted on the windshield, so i though id try here to research it.

They really don't work all that well although on the highway it can be useful because normally a cop will be shooting cars ahead of you.

As far as why your aloud? Because it actually has to be banned by each state most states just haven't bothered. It has it's uses although rather limited but considering you can move it from car to car some of them really aren't all that bad.

As it is at least in PA only state police can use radar guns however so if you get a speeding ticket anywhere else but major highways you really should be paying better attention.

I have always wanted to do this for my Valentine 1:

Do this, then you can put your V1 anywhere you want. I have seen some pretty clever placement setups.

V1s can be mounted remotely and then a remote much smaller be placed in an inconspicuous spot.

Yep never had a prob with mine yet. And most detecters on work halfway decent. If you are going to save money on tickets get a better detecter. V1 or Escort 8500 anything else is a waste of your money :)

This is where you want to mount it anyway. A radar detector works on line of sight. If you put it right off your dashboard, it won't see as far as having it mounted up higher.

To those that say they don't work, I would woefully disagree. My V1 will pick up radar a mile away.

But again, you have to understand why you are getting a radar detector in the first place. You buy a pair of binoculers to see farther. It's a tool to help you see farther.

Same goes with a radar detector. It's a tool to help you find the cops. It's not an end all be all license to go balls out. It just helps you find them easier. You still have to use your nogin and realize that you still have to look out for them and drive a little smarter...

BEL 615ir .... had it for a long time, and it was great.

put the detector in the "mouth' of the bumper, the laser sensor on the windshield, and the brain in the ashtray. :)
