hey i was driving along the other day when I observed this 200SX (for you guys in US, its a Nissan silvia S15 turbo) and an MR2 going pshh! pshh! when they changed gears, I know this is a blow off valve, but what I would like to know is
1. what do they do?
2. can one be put in the celi?

a blow off valve is a device that allows a release of the pressure built up in the intake by FI( trubo, or SC) and yes you can turbo/SC a celica

muwahha.. let me try.. i happen to have the SCC mag here with the BOV reviews..

"Compressor bypass valves, commonly known as blow-off valves (BOV) or diverter valves (DV), are a solution to a real problem. In turbocharged and centrifugally supercharged engines, the compressor often tries to flow more air than the engine (or closed throttle plate) will accept. Every time you shift a turbo car, for example, the turbo has to pump against a closed throttle plate. Pressure piles up in the pipe and pushes backward through the compressor. This causes all sorts of bad stuff to happen: compressor wheel blades resonate, thrust bearings fail.

Compressor bypass valves can alleviate the problems. Blow-off valves vent the pressure to the atmopshere, while diverter valves recirculate the air back in front of the compressor."

as for the 2nd question.. heh.. not gonna say a word.. u should be able to figure that one urself..

This is kinda O/T but still related in a way, but why do DSM's recirculate the air back, instead of venting it?? i read somewhere that if not recirculated, it makes the car run rich?? is it true??if so, how come?

hmm.. let me try..

because we have that mas sensor that is already precalculated for a certain amount of air to mix in with the given amount of fuel.. now if we vent the bov.. with the air being loss.. the same amount of fuel is being applied.. thats why people who vent run rich in between shifts.. i loss like 50 miles per tank venting.. so i had my days of flossin the bov.. but now i like to run my car the right way :) so yes.. its true.. the car runs rich.. in between shifts.. or when u let off the throttle for the bov to sound.. it's really no big problem.. all cars react differently.. some run fine vented.. some don't.. u just gotta try it to see..
