Thank God I was driving my 93 Celica GT.
I live about 45 miles from where I work. I drive south from Colorado Springs on a fairly well traveled, two lane highway. I had stopped and got a F/F burger before I left town. The residentual neighborhoods thin out fairly quickly as you go south b/c Ft. Carson takes up most of the land.
It was just beginning to get dark when I saw a bear running up from the left side of the road. He was at a dead run, head down and going for broke. I thought that I was going to hit it. I slammed on the brakes. The car stopped a lot quicker than I thought. (I was going about 55). I stopped in the middle of the lane still watching the bear. The bear was about 10-15 to the leeft of me. He still had his head down and still running like mad.
Jeez..He slammed right into the side of my door, got up on his hind feet for a second, made this weird snorting/barking sound, ran around behind my car and off into the woods. Sh!t!, I didn't know if I should get out and look at my car or what.
I thought about it later and I guess b/c bears smell better than they see, and my car is black, and it was dusk, I guess it didn't know I was there.
The Highway Patrol just said WTF.
Fender and door--$1700. I don't think that my insurance co ever really believed me.
