I don't know if this is a repost.. but here:
http://www.azstarnet.com/star/Sun/30525FATALROLLOVER.html
Apparently he was telling ppl on the Mitsubishi boards that he was gonna max out his car on canyon carving.. he never came back to tell about it cuz he crashed and killed himself and his friend..
He posted this on some forum before he died..
Here's the link:

Brian Mullholland posts:
So Im cruising in my 97 gst, still with the old t25. I have
gunned it before trying to see how fast it can go. I was pushing 17psi while gunning it down 1st and at 138 the turbo just stoped working. I was pretty tipsy at the time, and to out of it to really realize what i had done. Last night though cruisin up sabino I desided to test out my top speed again. I was using a clean 14psi so i wouldnt mess up turbo again, then at 138 the turbo stoped working again. Now Im a little
worried and i think its definately time to drop the big 16g i have into the car.
Either way, how fast have you all pushed your car, and where?
Brian
97 gst"
Whats really scary is that when I first got my car when I was 21 (back in 2000), I would try to max out my car, and I hit 140 a few times on a empty straight desert highway..

Yet another tragedy :(. I wouldn't dare try to canyon carve going that fast. Hell I've only taken my car up to 100mph on a deserted straightaway. Man, my prayers go out to those two poor saps. Hopefully this sends out a message.

This reminds me of when me and my friends in one of my friend's celica were coming back from SF to home one night. He was driving like 120-130 on his stock tires and the road wasn't even straight. Let me say this from experience (some people might say I'm a chicken but I can't help overcome that feeling), going 130 on stock tires and when the road isn't even straight or flat, PLEASE beg your friend to stop. I was pretty scared. The funniest thing about that moment was all of a sudden he came right next to a cop car and I guess the cop didn't know were were going that fast, but my friend braked from like 130 to 70 right next to a cop car without getting stopped.

ever since i've gotten my cf hood, i've started to drive more conservatively. so no more top speed testing (and who the hell does it on a canyon run??? that kinda crap scares me because my car almost went into a ravine at the Angeles Nat. Forrest when my brakes locked going into a turn)

Pretty crazy a few days ago 2 more people were killed in a small city in kansas, 2 people were racing on a city road and one of them lost control and hit a bus, 1 died for sure and last i knew other one was in a hospital

same here, well for the cf hood thing. i'm scared to go over 80 since i dont have pins on. i was actually thinking of putting some on so i can drive a little faster(when flow of traffic allows it) but if i do, it wouldnt be to go faster.
i think we all had our times where we wanted to push our cars to the limits. i remember last year i would drive home from college going 130+ at 2am in the morning just to get home sooner. and once going to magic mountain with some friends i got to 130 on the open hwy. but like many of us, i now know how stupid that was and the danger that i was putting on myself, and worst, the danger i was putting on my friends. too bad he couldnt figure that out sooner...

I lost control like that on a wet road and nearly slid into a ditch. It scared the hell outta me. But I would have sh*t a brick if I had been staring at a ravine and that happened. :AF: Glad you're okay.

why try to max out speed on curvy roads?
why not on a straight? doesnt that make more sense?

The more I grow up, the more I realize the futility of speeding. Sure, you shave off a few minutes from your drive, but the consequences of a mistake/freak accident are so great that they outweigh any (minimal) gains you'd get from flying 100mph. Heck, back when I'd just gotten my license, I'd push my Camry V6 to 170km/h (~100mph) on a small, straight road...
Looking back, I just have to smack myself for being such an arse...
Unfortunately, some people don't get the chance to experience this revelation.
My prayers and condolences go out to all those who have been hit by accidents like this (and their families).
EDIT:
See the first post. It makes mention of a GS-T (Eclipse), while "sedan" makes me think Galant.

Here's what the road looks like. It's a 2 lane in each direction. With large shoulders... He must have been coming down and hit the curve at to high of a speed. The only time I've hit 100 in starting at the intersection where the road becomes straight going south... The red dot, is about where the car accident happened.

i agree 100% with the posts about drinking and driving . . . however, people won't ever stop testing out the top speed of their car. it's done for the same reason everyone loves speed. it's the adrenaline rush that comes from the danger of risking your life. the feeling of having death creep up on you and then living to tell about it. unfortunatly, a lot of people (Brian Mullholland included) have fallen victim to that which brings them euphoria. and sadly, this will not stop others.
i send out my condolences to their families. no one has any idea of what they're going through . . .

He probably was exceeding a good 120mph, which is absolutely stupid on a canyon road, where incoming traffic is there. I mean I do 100 mph on the socal freeways and its not that bad. I have gotten to 125mph on the 405 and 5 freeways late at night with stock tires. It takes balls to that kinda stuff, not necessarily stupid, but its the rush - why do u think people skydive? so they can get that rush. its like no other.

Oooo, Sabino Canyon. I went swimming in the river up there before. It's kinda cool cause I guess the tree leaves and such make the water turn this amber color. Lotta big boulders to jump and dive off of into really deep water. I remember the place I ended up at had a cool boulder submerged underwater in the middle of the deep pool that actually reached high enough you could sit down and your chest would be out of the water letting you watch the other people jump off. Great place

He's so right. My condolences go out to the family, as well.
Personally, I've never reached real high top speeds. ONCE I hit 120 on the parkway because I fell behind friends and needed to catch up and one other time at about 2 am, I was going 100 down the parkway .. in heavy fog :-\. Real stupid of me but some guy was seemingly going to throw a bottle at my car for whatever reason and started following me. I eventually had my friends help box him in.
But everytime I start going over 80-85, I start getting scared ****less. Freaks me out ...

What a terrible waste of life. It's true that it's difficult to be sympathetic as they died out of their own stupidity, but they were minors and still too inexperienced to know this...
I personally have a high tolerance for speed. I'm not really scared when I am topping out my car, If I could I would drive my car at the topspeed whenever possible if the conditions allow it - legality, road conditions, traffic conditions and most importantly weather conditions! I would also recommend advanced/perfomance driving courses. Whenever I have the chance to go to germany, its 150mph in 6th gear lift. Drinking and Driving - never, especially on my beloved Celi!

That's crazy how you found this article..
I work and live down the street from where those 2 boys were killed. The driver went to my high school.
The saddest part is.. the boy driving, graduated from highschool 3 days before they were killed.
Funny thing is I got my speeding ticket for about 80 on that road.. but, they were drinking.. and lost control right before a sharp turn.
Overall.. it's sad.. may they rest in peace.

This may be a misunderstanding on either my behalf or the writer of the news article, but the article said it was a Mitsubishi sedan and the post said it was a GS-T. My question is isnt the GST a 2 door? If it is i am a little uncertain about this story.

Top speed testing is not the issue here, drinking and driving and/or lack of driving skills is. I've taken my Celica up to 140 at least a dozen times, my old bike to 130 and my new one to 155. On the expressways around Chicago, I have seen more than one incidence of some stupid kid trying to race and almost crashing his car. I saw some riced out Accord nearly crash at 120 mph. This situation will happen with any car that is capable of high speeds, and is especially true with bikes. Put someone who is imapired or just plain is not a good driver/rider in there and crap like this will happen. Just two weeks ago in my town, some stupid kid who was high had some girl on the back of some heavily modded ZX-7 that he had just gotten and crashed the thing at about 100 mph and killed both of them.

I would say its relativily safe to do high speed runs on an empty straight 6 lane highway (kinda like the one near me :D) as long as you have Z rated Tires.
Doing it on a 2 lane canyon road, now thats just asking for something unexpected to happen.
