I just finished testing black Krylon Fusion spray paint on a piece of interior plastic and engine plastic. With only one coat, it's completely scratchproof by you nails. Of course, it can be scratched by sharper objects, but the damage isn't as noticeable as with normal paint or dye. It takes 1 week to fully cure, but it's worth it. Looks exactly like normal spray paint (glossy). This would be a good basecoat if you want to dye your interior. That way, if you scratch the dye, the Krylon paint will still be there underneath, making the scratch much less visible (as long as it's near the same color as the dye). I found the paint at an Ace Hardware store after a long search at the usual places (Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, Sears Hardware, etc.).

Why do they call it "Fusion"? Is it only because it bonds to plastic or is there some other reason?

but if you spray this on before you dye your interior will the dye even stick? I'm sure if you lightly sand the Fusion paint, the dye will stick fine.Originally posted by GINYU-GTS

GTS-6 I tested it out on the tray behind the rear seats. The smooth plastics are the parts that dye has the most difficulty sticking. The center console is the easiest part of the interior for the dye to stick to. There aren't that many colors available, and lots of stores only have a handful of colors. If you can't find an Ace Hardware store around you, you can order the paint here:

http://www.acehotline.com/search_results.asp?PAGE=1&txtsearchParamTxt=fusion&txtsearchParamType=ALL&txtsearchParamCat=ALL&txtsearchParamMan=ALL&txtsearchParamVen=ALL&txtDateAddedStart=&txtDateAddedEnd=&txtPriceStart=&txtPriceEnd=&txtSale=

BTW, I tested it out on aluminum, and it initially sticks very well to it, but in the end it isn't very scratch-/chip-proof.

Then would you suggest using just this stuff instead of SEM vinyl spray for the interior. Or do you highly recommend using both together. Is it too glossy for the Fusion to be by itself, and that's why you suggest using it as only a basecoat?

It's way to glossy to use for the only coating on the interior. Like I said, it's just like regular spray paint, so if you use it properly, it will create an almost mirror-like finish.

If its close to the color you want to use for your interior, it will work great as a basecoat since it's very tough. If the dye gets scratched, the Fusion will still be underneath, making the scratch much less obvious.

ok I gotcha, thanks Bomber! ;)

one more thing, what's the less glossy of the two SEM black dyes. One's Satin and one's Landau. I want one that's as close to flat black as possible. Thanks in advance!

My understanding is the Satin one is less glossy.

I don't think anyone has used Landau yet, but Satin is just fine. A little shinier than the dash, but the shininess makes the dash look like it's made out of real vinyl instead of just plastic.
