what tire speed rating will work fine for our cars? i was going to purchase some kumho's with a speed rating of H when I get my rims, but I called Discount tires to see if they wanted to try to match or beat Whalentires's price and they said the speed rating of H would not work with my car. He said I need some with the rating of Z. He was lying to me to jack up the price?

An H speed rating is a 130MPh rating. So basically yes he was lying to you.
But on the other hand if you are looking at Kumho Ecsta 712s for your car I think you got lied to about the speed rating to begin with. All Ecsta 712s in 17" size are W rated (168MPH).
Give TireRack a call of visit them online. Not only will you get MUCH better advice and the truth about tires but at least for me no one local has ever been able to come within 25%, (usually closer to 50% markup) of their prices and you'll notice that everyone who has a guaranteed price match will not match mail-order prices.

supposably they were able to match the price, but they had to charge taxes and a little extra for the better tires.
 so i would end up paying about 80 bucks more than what i could get them from the net.
oh well, thanks for the info.

I might look into this one a bit further... According to Kumho's web site they don't make that tire in a size that will fit the Celica on 17" wheels: http://www.kumhousa.com/pdf_files/711back.pdf
However I do see that it is listed at www.whalentire.com as available in a 215/40-17 and in stock as well so who knows.
