How:
remove drain plug, let oil drain. replace plug. Remove fill plug, fill with oil, replace plug.

When: Basically never, unless you have some other goal (a small HP gain form synthetic), or if there are hard shifting or synchro issues. most folks see small gains from synthetic.

Why: the reasons above. The tranny fluid really doesn't break down appreciably, my suggestion to the average person would be to replace it when the clutch or transmission needs replacing.

It is a pretty simple procedure, it should take you about 30 minutes if your lucky and can get the damn plastic cover off the bottom of your car.
