I was driving home from my gf's apartment last night around midnight and i could see this big ass storm coming up on my right....so im hauling ass going like 110 trying to get to my exit on the highway before the storm hit....well, i didnt make it and it started raining like fvckin noah's ark or something. I was worried because i had my completely exposed filter on my cai (i have one filter that is completely unprotected and one from injen with the moisture guard on it)....so it starts getting really bad and my car starts bogging and jumping when i would even barely touch the gas. I was only able to go about 40 on the freakin highway...it was ghey...there wasnt an exit for awhile so i had to pull under a bridge and change the filter for the protected one from injen....well i got out and after a few semi's passed within about 10 feet of my car going over 70 i was like "yeah, fvck that!" so i hobbled down the highway bogging my car for another couple of miles until i found a gas station and pulled in...i pulled off the cai piping and literally poured several cups of water out of it, i even found big drops of water inside my throttle body!!! eek. so i emptied the cai and put the protected filter on and let the car idle for awhile so that i could work the moisture out...after that it was fine but i was really scared i was going to hydrolock my car...i was probably about one good rev away from doing so.

lesson learned: Use moisture guard at all times!!

my car actually stalled out a couple times when i had a cai and when it was raining hard. freaked me out, i seriously thought i hydrolocked. worse part was i was on the freeway when it stalled out on me and barely made it to the right of the highway. lesson learned and switched to a short ram :D

Have you cleaned your filter recently? Water shouldn't be able to build up in there once the car's off. Once the suction is gone, it would easily flow out the filter. Also, no amount of protection on the filter will prevent hydrolock. A submerged filter is a submerged filter, no matter what kind it is.

The moisture gaurd only keeps the filter clean, it does not prevent hydrolock. The only way you can hydrolock your car is if the filter is COMPLETELY submerged in a pool of water. A small peice of metal over the filter wont stop that.

Do you have a splash guard on the inside of your wheel well? If you dont, you should, it helps a lot in those types of situations.....

if u even get a hint of hydrolock, u should turn off ur car compltetly...its just not worth risking

I got a question, say with the AEM CAI, does the bypass valve really help in these type of cases?

well scc magazine tested it liek last year or soemthing like that..the owner of aem tested it on his NSX so he must have trusted it..i read the atricle...they completely submerged the filter and ran thew car on the dyno at different trottle settings...a few times it came close to sucking up alot of water ...id say the bypass valve worked but its got its limits also..i woudlnt put too much trust in it..but its a little insurance and id think it was worht the 40 bucks

K&N's Cold Air Intake comes with a Dry Charger. It's a cover for the air filter and supposedly keeps the filter dry.
