Stay away from that car.
I drove it for a year since brand new and had lots of electric broblems and also compression boo-boo.
If celica is too expensive for you, then you should not drive vr4. vr4 is VERY expensive to maintain.
You are not that rich to drive a cheap car/vr4 4 4k/! :)

I love my 3000GT, no problems in 30,000+ miles except the driver's side washer fluid sprayer isn't at full power. Granted, I don't have two turbos under the hood to worry about.

Even the base model is expensive to maintain, however.

My suggestion is to get onto
3000GT/Stealth International (http://www.3si.org) and search around and talk to people.

Hope you join the 3S (in case you don't know, the 3000GT and Stealth are termed "3S") club!

PS - what year is the VR-4?

mitsubishi's arent nearly in the same class quality wise as toyota and honda. they dont last for "forever" like toyotas were known to. IMO, get a used honda or used toyota. or, if u are not as poor as u think, ;) get ur childhood dream and fix it, then u can fix it up.

Ha, Ive already got the honda (see signature). My next two cars are going to be a 98 3000gt vr4 and a 98 240sx. just whenever and whereever i find them..and if i have the money

but i looked at the 3000gt. im not getting it. first its not in great condition as i was first told. and its not even a vr4, its a base model with a turbo, and the turbo blew its seal. on top of all that its a 93.. which isnt even the body style I like, so im not going to spends thousands of dollars on a car thats not the one i want.so Ill just keep dumping my money into my honda until I get the money for either one of those cars =) but thanks for everyones help

yea I love it too. I planned a long time ago to do a s14 silvia conversion. i was like yea.. not too many people have done this. then bam.. silvia conversion pops up in an import magazine.. and well there you go.. its almost as common as.. a honda civic.. ok not that extreme but you get the point

Good thing you decided against the 3000GT. An 8 year old $30,000+ car for $4,000 means there is something very bad with the car.
As for the 240SX. That is a great thing to work on for a couple of reasons. Good looking car (and only 2 doors), SR20DET motor, and RWD. If that Silvia was ever sold here, I would own it. I always wanted a 240SX before I actually had money, and by that time, they weren't offerend anymore. Maybe Nissan will do us a favor and finally bring that one over to go with it's "new" perfmormance orientated business in the US.

Not likely. Theyre bringing over the skyline and the skyline gtr.. and theyre making the new 350Z. theyve already redone the maxima and the altima. The sentra se-r spec v is supposed to be specifically targeted for us import people. So i really doubt theyre going to bring over the silvia. Which makes me sad. So either one day when I become very rich (haha) ill import a silvia.. but it looks like ill have to do a s14 silvia conversion from the 240sx's that are still floating around in america. =|

Well,
From what I'm used to (87 Conquest TSI), rebuilding/fixing a turbo isn't a huge deal. As long as the seal is an o-ring. If it is, and it's only worn...all you have to do is crack the seal and replace it. (This is what I did on mine and it was a mitsu. turbo).
You will need to check that the housing is not warped though. If if was blown from a lack of water cooling, instead of heavy use, it may be a total loss. Definitely worth looking into.

Well, it's still gonna cost a good bit of cash to do an engine swap to a SR20DET.. since they're JDM only, ya know.. plus your car isn't gonna be smog legal after the swap.. You can get about just as much power, if not more, by keeping your stock KA24 engine in your 240 and adding a turbo to it.. still won't be smog legal but you won't have to worry about an engine swap at least.

Total cost of getting a used '98 240SX SE (since the SE comes with a factory LSD) and doing either an SR20DET swap or adding a turbo to the KA24 is gonna be around at least $18,000 with parts and labor. Don't forget then too you're going to have to keep a very close eye on your baby after the turbo has been added.. so figure in increased maintenance costs there as well..

And remember, if you don't do the swap your car is only gonna have around 150 HP.. so... heh..

Just something to think about. :)

At any rate here's a link to a page with an absolutely beautiful turbo'd KA24 240SX ...

Heh Modern Angel she is sponsored by a mechanic with access to a Japan Junkyard who does engine swaps into Hondas in 48 hours.... She doesnt have to get a 98 itd be cheaper to convert and when the sr20det comes it will come with the tranny and he can get the lsd out of it.

naah, anything further north from here is too cold for me. in fact.. sometimes its too cold here in jacksonville. But I may never move from florida just for the fact that theres no emissions tests. or find another state that got rid of them haha
