You will hear it more than anything else.

It makes the car sound better(louder) more than anything. I think it is said to add like 1hp. You won't feel a difference, but it is a really easy mod to do and helps you get a little familiar with working on the car.

I removed my butterfly a couple of weeks ago, and i did see a minor increase in performance.

Mostly what you will notice is the sound. The butterfly is there only to muffle the sound of the intake a bit at low revs by restricting the airflow.
Without the butterfly, i did notice a slight increase in throttle response at low revs.

The best thing to do if you end up pulling out your butterfly is to also remove that pice of plastic in front of the air box. This will increase airflow to the front of the box and its extremely easy to do.
Instructions for that are on celica.net under "semi-ram" install.

Also, you can drop in a cheap replacement filter for the stock filter in the airbox to give another couple of HP. TRD makes a drop in replacement, and so does K&N. I installed the K&N with little to no effort and found that with the other two mods that it made a noticable difference. (K&N part number 33-2041-1)

Of course the best thing to do is rip out that stock airbox and throw in a CAI or Short ram. That will cost you a few hundred bucks, and you should get a mechanic to do it for you.
These airbox mods are quick, easy, cheap, and you dont even need any tools. :D

It just makes a more throatier sound in your engine and i did notice my throttle is bit more responsive. That's about it.

Okay, removing the butterfly will make the engine sound a little "throatier" than stock. The extra sound comes from the engine, and not the exaust. If your exaust is loud enough, it might just drown it out completely.

As far as what EXACTLY to do, there are several tech documents in the "installs" section of this site, as well you can find even more documents on other celica servers such as teamunison.org, and celica.net.
Its a pretty easy mod to do, but if you're not comfortable doing it, just print out the instructions and take it to your local mechanic.
I did it myself without even needing any tools other than a flashlight. :)

As far as the airfilter goes, you live in BC, right? You can get that K&N filter I was talking about at canadian tire for about $75

Doing this mod, you are going to have to pull the filter out anyways, so you might as well put a good one in. You will probably see better gains out of the filter than you will the butterfly anyways.
