View Full Version : TRD shift knob / stock shifter questions

Ok, so I finally got my leather/CF shiftknob. When I open the package.. wow, this thing is really small. The knob looks great tho. Anyway, here's the question:
With the stock shifter, the knob sits about a half inch above where the boot sits. This looks pretty strange, because the shifter boot has that chrome ring on it. So I figure I have two options. 1, I can somehow alter the boot so that it comes all the way up to the new shift knob (I think would still look kinda strange), or 2, I can take the shifter out and cut about a half inch off and re-thread it.
I know, I know... cut stock shifters is rice and all.. but I'm not doing this to have a "short shifter" (obviously, I wouldn't be reducing the throw any..), but I would be doing this so that my knob fit really well..
Or, I could return the knob/sell it to someone, and try to find a different knob to use. What do you guys think?

PS- if anybody has one of the TRD leather/aluminum shift knobs that they want to sell, I'll buy it from you, even if the inside piece is out of it.

yeah.. that could work, but I still have the stock shifter (and I'm planning on keeping it, I'm waiting for my kumosport bushings to get here)... might look funny with the shift boot pulled all the way up the stock shifter..
I dunno, at this point I'm thinking about returning it and getting something else..

why dont u get a short shifter? cuz with the stock shifter and that shift knob, it makes it look like you have a truck shifter. trust me, it is one of the best mods that i have done so far get one. its also a very easy install.

Satoshi, nice pics of the install. I was wondering if you know if C's makes a short shifter for our car? I have the same shift knob and it's been sitting in my room for many many months because I still can't decide which shifter to buy, the TRD, TWM or C's (if they make one).

i installed C's short shifter.
i love it, but installation is not easy, not reversible, and need some drilling.
i recommend TRD because installation of TRD is easy, and needs no modification

Other than install, does the C's offer a better feel, shorter throw or shorter in length compared to the TRD?

How much was the C's and do you have the part number by any chance?

I had a C's SS before and I absolutely loved it. I actually tried to do a GB on the C's SS for the Prelude too...but that fell apart even when I got 20 buyers.

Please let me know. Thank you.

do what i did with my momo knob. it did the same thing, sat all high up, actually with a slight gap at the bottom because the bottom of the knob screws off to reveal four allen wrench tightened screws for mounting it on the shifter, when it screwed back up it left a gap. i took the shifter boot off and turned it inside out, then took a hack saw and cut a bunch of the plastic tube at the top off and put a little spring on my shifter so i could mount the knob all the way down, tighten the screws, screw the bottom on, and the boot springs up to fit flush against it. if your knob is as low as it can go and it still looks too high, just cut off an inch or so from the top of the shifter or get a short shifter. personally, i think that the short shifters i've seen, when installed, look really gay cuz they sit so low and have 30 feet of slack shift boot crumpled all around it, but that's just my opinion.
hope that helped a little

The person is going to ship it from Japan?

If Satoshi says the C's feels just like the TRD, I think I will just go with the TRD.

deviant - I'll try that, sounds like about the same situation.

I've actually got kinda used to the gap tho, it lets you really wrap your hand around the shift knob and get whatever kind of grip you need.

MicaCeli - I'm pretty sure this is actual leather, but it's not real carbon fiber, just looks like carbon fiber. Did theirs come in a TRD thing with japanese writing all over it + 3 shift pattern stickers?

EDIT: I'm not getting a short shifter, partly b/c of what deviant said about the boot looking strange. Also, I find the throw to be short enough, and I won't be shifting sooo fast that I wear out my syncros. I should be getting my shifter bushings from kumosport this week, and I think that will improve the feel of the shifter a lot.
