Alright, it's parsing only the lead :p as the "stick out the tongue" smilie.
Don't know what the proper cure is for the vBulletin software.
good question.. dont have a clue how to fix it.. ill get around to it though..does it work if you just click on it instead of typing it?

Typed: :puke
Clicked: :puke
I don't know if you can choose the codes used for the smilies, but maybe changing the smilies that look like ":p*" to ":p*:" would cure the problem (add the trailing colon, like ":rolleyes:", ":cool:", etc.)
so just add the ending colon on all of them and that should fix it?

Here's what happens under various circumstances:
TYPE: :puke
CLICK: :puke
UPPERCASE: :PUKE
TRAILING COLON: :puke:

Could we change some of the names of the smiley?
For instance:
puke = barf
pissed = fumed
popcorn = snack
just a suggestion. :)
you guys compile a list of what needs to be changed and what I need to change them to and sure no problem..

Pretty much any smiley that starts with ":P" and any smiley that ends with a number needs to be changed.

I was thinking about the names and this is what i came up with:
pissed2 = stumpy
shocked2 = suprised
spinning2 = revolve
spinning3 = rolling
that should fix all the smileys. :)
