It varies from state to state. The license plate/DMV office should be able to tell you.

You need to check the actual title, if you did not get a paper copy you have other problems.
Laws do vary from state to state but are fairly consistant. As Scott said contact your DMV about specifics. You can also contact the State Highway Patrol.
In Ohio the process is as follows...
If a car with a salvage title came from out of state it MUST be re-titled as salvage within Ohio. Skipping this step will lead to a nightmare later, don't ask me why this is needed it just is. If the car already has an in state salvage title you can start work.
Keep all receipts for work and it will help if you photo-document what was done.
Once the work is done take the car to the SHP depot to get it checked out, not every depot will do this and you MUST have an appointment. The officer will verify that everything you have receipts for is on the car and that it is in safe working order with no fluid leaks. He will give you a certificate to say that the car is eligible for a salvage rebuilt title.
You can take the certificate to the title bureau and get the salvage rebuilt title. Then you can finally go get plates. The car will have to be towed to everywhere up until this point.
Good luck, document everything you do to the car and make sure you know the process before you start.
