I have been looking for sometime now at getting a second vehicle. I really want an SUV. I am getting to that point in my life where I just want a comfortable vehicle to haul people and things around and also have something that can get me to work in crappy weather. I do not want another car or a pick up truck. I was going to lease something else, perhaps a small SUV (ie CRV, RAV4, Escape, etc...) but I don't think I will like them. Then I started looking to lease a Pathfinder (great leases on them right now). Then I really focused on the Murano...I really dig this thing. But I can only imagine the leases on a Murano would be astronomical. I could of course get rid of the Celica, and just buy a Murano....but I realized that I would miss this car soooooooo much. How the heck did people just give this car up without thinking much about it? And to top it all off, I own the Celica outright.

Why don't you look for something used? Alot cheaper, and since it's a crappy weather, utility vehicle, why do you need something snazzy? Isn't that what the Celica is for?

My rationale is the cost of purchasing a used vehicle over 3 years would actually be more than leasing a brand new vehicle over the same time period.

But after those three years you, own the car, instead of renting it and giving it back with nothing to show for it. If you get rid of the car after 3 years, I would think in the end, buying used is cheaper than leasing.

Look at Subaru Foresters. If you want a small SUV with power wait for the turbocharged version of it. It is pretty cheap and reliable and has very good crash test results.

personally I love the Highlander Limited.

The wife and I looked at one and fell in love with it, 4X4, V6, loaded, leather.
Down side its a bit on the pricy side:(

I would like the lease b/c I would get something new in 3 years. That's my point.

The Forrester is pretty nice. Not really what I was looking for. I kind of decided to stay away from the smaller SUVs since the price on something larger (ie Pathfinder) was not much more money per month.

Why are all car companies coming out with those stupid plastic body panels?

I want the new Chrysler SUV. My next car will be simply to ride in and be very comfortable.

Because they don't dent and are probably cheaper to replace then sheet metal. If you use the thing like it's meant to be used they're a great addition. I'd rather swap smaller plastic panels instead of entire doors.

The Murano is definitely bad arse but is there a point to having that and your Celica? Maybe you can convince yourself that two cars is ok if you get a cheaper SUV but IMHO 2 cars for one person is a waste of $$.

That's what I am dealing with...I just can't grasp the concept of getting rid of my Celica. I really do love the car...love driving it, love looking at it.

How about a used 4Runner? They last forever, but you probably already know that. I sold my '91 w/199K miles (and still running great) before getting the '03 V8.

If you go off road at all, I think its hard to beat a 4Runner.

Whatever you do, don't get one of those weenie SUVs that are only good on pavement (*cough*murano*cough*). Might as well drive the Celica!

Get some snow tires and put a trailer hitch on the Celica. :gap:

Not necessarily. My two cars cost me $12,000 total (and insurance is only ~$250 more/yr) I have my summer fun Miata, and winter/dog/"utility" Protege. I would've spent more money to have a single practical and fun car. Another nice thing about having 2 cars (especially two cheap used cars) is that you do your own maintainance on one (saving more money) while you drive the other.

You have a point. If both cars are reasonably priced thats one thing but to have a brand new car and another car and be putting yourself on a tight budget because of them is not a good idea to me.

I agree. Although, he does own the Celica now.

I think he should look for something used, instead of leasing something new. I assume the Celica is your fun (and fuel effiecient) daily driver, while the SUV or whatever will be your bad weather, comfortable, blah, blah blah car. An SUV is an SUV they aren't that different, why would you want to bother getting a new one in 3 years? For my utility car, I don't care what it is or how pretty it is, as long as it does it's job - it's an appliance. The Miata on the other hand, is my Car, the reason I like driving for no reason. If I were to get something new in a few years, it would be to replace the car I get enjoyment out of, not the utility car.
If you want to replace a car in three years, replace the Celica. Cars like that will be different and better by then (already are), but SUVs? Have they really changed in the last 5 years except getting bigger, heavier, and a little more luxurious?

That's my 2 cents anyway

Well, I went out the dealer, drove the Murano...absolutely loved it. HAd a deal for $500 over invoice and 3.9% financing. But, since I am headed back to law school next year (hopefully), I just couldn't mentally do it. I heeded my own advice that a car is just a car and there is nothing wrong with mine. I'll keep it for another 2-3 years and once I am out of law school, maybe I'll get a Cayenne.

i'll bet you could get a v6 4-runner for around 24 if you wait for the "1 at this price" deals on weekends at larger dealerships. remember it is a new v6 and pretty powerful (more horsepower than the v8, just less torque) and it fools a lot of people into thinking it's a v8 (i used to sell them so trust me). take one for a test drive, you'll be suprised
