For all those who either checked their lift bolts or had service done on them. Which situation applied to you:
1. You still had lift function, but checked the bolts anyways, and they were ok.
2. You still had lift function, but checked the bolts anyways, but at least one of them were broken or had major wearing.
3. You didn't have lift, and checked the bolts and only one was broken or had major wear.
4. You didn't have lift, and checked the bolts and both were broken or both had major wear.

I'd be curious to know which bolt most people are finding broken. Mine is the intake side, exhust just shows some wear.

Will be checking mine this weekend. So I'll let you know which side has the most wear. I'll also take/post pics.

How can you tell if your bolts need to be replaced or not? I was told just take the valve cover off... will it be that evident, that the bolts are worn, and/or broken, or do you have to do something specific. Please give me as much info as you can, as I am a n00b when it comes to taking the valve cover off my engine.

remove valve cover.
remove bolt.
If it only has threads, then it's broken. If it extends about 1 cm (plus or minus) beyond the threads, then it isn't broken.
Torque on the bolts is very low, make sure not to over torque when replacing them.

My intake side was broken, exhaust side looked just fine, no wear at all.

intake = closer to front of the engine, yes?
in that case, intake broken, exhuast had little wear.

Toyota dealer just replaced mine and said neither side was broken, only worn. I asked to see the bolts but they said they had sent them to Toyota. Is that normal? Also, lift is there but doesn't seem to hit as dramatically as it used to. It seems like less of a switch. In fact, it doesn't really feel like the dealer did anything. Anybody else had this experience?

If the bolts weren't broken, then performance wise, the dealership didn't do anything.

intake broken, exhaust had wear.... going to try extracting the broken piece myself as soon as I have a day to devote to it.
Scott after you do it, send me a pm and let me know how it went. Did you see my post about my abbreviated repair plan? Let me know if you think that'll work.
I checked 2 other GTS's at the meet saturday, and found both had severly worn intake bolts, and not as worn exhaust bolts, so I switched the bolts, so that at least they will last long enough so they can go and get new bolts and replace them. One had 27K miles, the other 50k. Mine has 65k

I thought worn bolts could affect performance, too, by delaying engagement/duration of lift. I thought broken bolts would act as if lift was turned off altogether.

Worn bolts will make no noticable difference what so ever. ONly a broken bolt matters.
Actually, it has to be broken, and the pience has to have dropped out of place.

i believe mine has wedged itself in there which is why I do not suffer any obvious issues the bolt was broken. The shaft has to be able to rotate in order for your lift not to engage..
Scott did you read my post above?

what does it mean if sometimes lift works and sometimes it doesn't? I checked my bolt and it is definitely broken. The broken piece seems to be holding in place by a thread or 2, but my lift is still irratic. Seems to work more consistently after an oil change when there's more oil in the engine.

They probably lied. Manufacturers in ANY industry almost never recover parts once a TSB or something like it has been issued unless it's a failure after the countermeasure date. What would be the point in recovering parts you alreayd know are bad?
Anyways mine was intake broken, exhaust worn.

how does the motor "feel" when you hit lift and only one of the bolts is broken? i'm wondering if this problem is only noticeable when both bolts are separated...

Mine just plain had no lift some of the time, then other times it felt normal, and other times it felt weak or late. Most of the time it just wasn't there though.

ok thanks... i'm now curious as to whether i might have a broken or possibly just separated bolt but still holding the rocker shaft. the motor has never missed lift yet, but somehow the car doesn't feel as fast as it used to be, maybe i need new plugs or something... what sucks is that i just hit 60K miles this week and i don't want to deal with the bunch of a$$holes at toyota anymore (already took my fair share of crap from them)...
