I bought my celica GTS at 20,000 miles and it's 6 spd.
It's been a lil' more than a month since I bought it and recently, when I shift (3rd to 4th, 4th to 5th and especially from 5th to 6th) it just revs up and the speed doesn't go up. Then it settles down and becomes normal. This happens usually when I start to drive and settles down a bit as I drive. I do warm up my car. For example, I shift from 5th to 6th at 55 mph and sometimes it juss revs upto about 4500 rpm or 5000 rpm and then comes back down to 3000 rpm or a bit below. Do any of you guys know why this is happening? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

but something tells me toyota does not cover clutches under warrantee.
kinda like brakes. its gotta be replaced from normal wear and tear.

It definately sounds like a bad clutch, although just over 20,000 miles is early for a new clutch. Sounds like the previous owner didn't know what he/she was doing.

MAF - Mass Airflow Sensor
and yes, sounds like your clutch, mine is doing it too right now, its the clutch slipping, we both need new clutches...try going into 4th or 5th gear at around 20-30 mph, floor it and see if your RPM's goes flying up without the speedometer going up accordingly, mine does that, its another way to see the clutch slipping, hope this helps, what is a good clutch everyone, cause i need one, thanks TIM

It was my first time on a stick shift.

CRAP!!!

What's a good clutch? should I go with ACT?
I think I got the basics down.

Dude..definetly the clutch..
It totally depends on how street friendly you wanna get...
I suggest a TRD Sports clutch..it's pretty damn good for the street, and it holds power pretty well.
It's one of the few TRD items that actually do something for our car.

if it's clutch i need to get..
What is it exactly that I need to buy?
cuz at trd racing they have:
00602-31250-AE952 TRD Clutch Disk (GT & GTS) - TRD Japan 126.00
00602-31201-025 TRD Clutch Kit (GT & GTS) - TRD USA 341.13
is it just the Clutch disk I need?
thx

You might as well just get the ACT street clutch kit. It holds a little better than TRD, and the price is a little lower.
Here's a link: http://www.suprastore.com/actstreetclu4.html
Comes with everything you need.

Unlike the trd springs, struts, shocks, exhaust, lsd, flywheel, oil cooler, shortshifter, etc.
Sorry I just had to. :)

Get a stock OEM clutch. You'll never make enough torque to take advantage of an aftermarket set, you'll just have a stiffer pedal and that's not what you need if you're still learning how to drive stick.

Labor prices range from $200-$400, so definately call around. I got HUGELY different price quotes from different shops. Also, check out the place first and look for a clean shop that has tranny jacks. Do a search on transmission jack to see what one looks like.

If you go with a new clutch, you'll need a new clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing. You can get the TRD clutch plate, and go get a factory throw out bearing, but it's better to just get a full kit because it restores everything to new.
Labor will run you anywhere from $250-700(dealer). I got mine done for $300 in 6 hours.

Here we go, straight from www.toyotaworld.com
Clutch Disk $49.37
Pressure Plate $77.71
Throw-out Bearing $24.17
Total $151.25
Now you can either spend $150 and stick in another stock clutch or spend more than twice as much for the TRD Clutch Kit (~$340) and have something you'll never take full advantage of performance wise. The only thing you'll gain is the ability to stick "TRD Clutch" in your sig and a fatigued left leg from a stiffer clutch pedal. The choice is yours.

not a single person who says it's not a clutch problem huh?
sux...
so a TRD clutch won't make any kinda difference performance wise?
guess I'll juss fight with the dealer to see what I can get free.
Thanx people

Well,
I think that ACT and TRD clutches will endure longer under hard driving conditions than a stock clutch. It's not always they holding load people are concerned about. Plus, remember that lets say in 1st gear, you have a lot more torque than what you dyno at, so sometimes its good to have a little more holding power.
Correct me if I'm wrong guys,

so you guys seriously think sticking with the OEM is better than an ACT or TRD clutch (even with a CAI and exhaust?). i actually noticed i was having this problem today and i was gonna get some HID's next, but instead i think i will have to get a clutch and flywheel. will a fidanza flywheel work with a new stock clutch??

i though you were selling your car... why would you put in a new clutch now?

this is why:
bought my celica GTS at 20,000 miles and it's 6 spd.

the car, exterior wise was in perfect condition. and after it gets fully warmed, the problem gets less obvious. I guess I'd have to take it to the dealer and start complaining

That sounds exactly like my car when my clutch was going out at around 86k miles. Someone driving that car was slipping the clutch like mad to cause it to deteriorate so quickly. Mine would only slip when I boosted though (it would actually slip while in gear when I hit boost and on higher RPM shifts).
Clutches are rated for their ability to hold certain torque loads. Although the Celica makes some nice HP numbers for the cars weight it has very little torque. As you can see in the dyno graphs adding the bolt-ons gains you 4-10 ft

for a OEM clutch assembly (disk, throwout bearing, etc) and resurfacing of the flywheel plus the 7-8hrs of labor their books call for expect about 800-1000 dollars for a clutch job at toyota

I'm screwed... 1000 bucks???
one of my coworkers tested it out and he said it could be a matter of adjusting the clutch. he said the stock clutch for celica gts was really deep...
should I tell all this to the dealter when I go in on wednesday? or should I pretend to not know jack?

I think I may have forgotten one important detail.
it's not just the shifting that brings the rpm up...
the shifting itself doesn't affect anything.
it's when I gas it hard or moderately hard.
The speed doesn't go up instead the rpm tends to just go up...
yeah... does sound like the clutch...
