You will need some freeon(sp?) and special hoses to recharge it yourself. I recommend that you take it to a cheap shop or something.

they sell recharge kits. i dont think we use freon, i think we use something like r35 or something similar to that.

They don't use r12 (freon) anymore. Although it's a much better refrigerant compared to the r134a, it's bad for the environment... plus it's pretty expensive. I recommend taking it in. You definitely have a leak somewhere!!!

go to your local auto parts and buy some can of r134a you can also purchase some hoses to recharge the system.... i have never re-charged the system on my celica....but i do this for living...i work in HVAC...its pretty much straight forward you will need to charge the system turn on your car and have the AC running install the low loss fitting hoses on the suction line and the other side to the can...the suction line is the one with insulation wrapped around it...if you have any further questions feel free to contact me.

So where is the low pressure valve that we connect the hose to?

when you take off the big plastic cover in the engine bay the lines are right underneath it

I used to be in the HVAC field too :)

You also need to put some conditioner/lubricant in to lubricate/seal the rubber seals and o-rings. R134a is smaller in molecular size and can seep past the orings/seals over time. Lubricant helps tighten up this seal. If car's AC is still cold then just add conditioner/lubricant. If not cold then add conditioner/lubricant first then add R134a afterward.
Any auto stores sell the R134a charge kit with both conditioner and R134a. You can probably pick up everything you need for about 30 bucks.
The low pressure side of the system has a valve that has a blue or black cap on it. In our car it is marked with an L on the cap. Whatever you do, never hook up your recharge hoses to the high side, i.e. one with red cap, marked with an H.

To make it work at max efficiency you should also know how much gramms to put in. We have an automatic recharge machine and every car requires different ammount of r134a.
