View Full Version : is my axle messed up?

ok a few weeks ago i've been getting this weird noise when i make left turns. like a deep rattling sound.

especially u-turns and left turns over uneven roads (i.e, a dip or a bump).

i thought it was something in the back at first. so i took everything out, then took my uncle for a ride. and i couldn't duplicate it. then i went next to a curb. turned the wheel all the way left, and accelerated out, tapping the gas a little to give it a jerk or two and sure enough, i got the noise.

my uncle immediately said it was the axle, on the front right side...

now...what does this mean? what do i do? (i guess probably take it to toyota). will i get any beef about my CAI or something from them? (it's beyond me how a cai can **** up an axle, but i wouldn't put it past them).

is this from hard driving? as far as stress goes, it's an auto GTS, so there's no hard launches. i thought it might be the powerbraking, but why only on the right side then? and i doubt powerbraking to 2000rpms for a few seconds (i was careful to never hold it too long) would be more stressful than some of the other GTS guys launching at 5000rpms and getting wheel hop (i stopped getting very very minor wheelhop about a year ago after i put the CAI on). besides. i haven't powerbraked or done anything like that in over a month...well before i started getting the noise. i've done it once or twice since after the noise though but that was just a quick brake stand and jump.

i've hit a curb twice. once a really long time ago (last summer), and a second time, sorta, the front left wheel kinda bounced off a curb like a week or two ago, but after i had already started getting the noise.

Sounds like the CV joint is going bad. Have you looked at the boot around the axle to see if it is ripped? that would allow water and dirt in while letting the grease sling out as you drive.

It's possible you tore up a CV joint. Is there a lot of grease in the wheel well? If so you did.

A CV can go without ever doing a hard launch. Road debris can cut the rubber boot, allow the grease out and water in (this will destroy the joint. If caught in time there will be no damage if not expect to buy a new CV.

this has been happenning for a few weeks now :(

only when i make left turns. so...if i make really slow left turns and avoid debris, will i be ok until monday? (appointment with dealer).

if the CV joint's totally fux0red, is this under warranty? could it be broken from the dealer ****ing something up? they did the obligatory tranny work at the 15k mile service and ****ed up the air filter and oil change (the plug for the oil pan fell out while driving, and they left a sensor stuck under the throttle to keep it stuck at WOT).

I would take it to a different dealership if I were you. They don't seem to competent. You're car should be fine til you can have it looked at. The tell tale sign of bad CV joints is a clicking/rattling sound when you are turning. I would think if this is the problem that it is covered under warrenty. They should last for quite a while with proper maintenance.

Don't rule out ABS problems if you are breaking while turning. This is easy to test out (don't break while turning)...good luck

it could be a CV joint...my old GT-S's rt side CV boot was ripped at 50,000 miles....although it didnt rattle yet, up until i got rid of the car.

heh, i knew this was gonna happen.

rattling got worse. i crawl through turns either way and i try to have the straightest possible line coming out of the turn (when it usually rattles).

the rain might have something to do with it as well.

seems fine in straight lines but on some bumps i think i hear a rattle. or it might be my mind playing tricks on my paranoid self.

appointment's on monday morning with the dealer. hope i make it. *crosses fingers*

Find a good toyota dealership. BTW yes i would drive on it as long as its under Warrantee .
