Yes, it can be done. Not legal if it can distract the driver but it can be done. I don't know what it entails exactly on that particular car but it has to do with either bypassing or disabling the sensor that 'knows' when the car is in Park. (clipping a wire, or splicing in an additional wire)

I have the Kenwood excelon dvd player, and it has the same problem. U can only play dvds while the e-brake is up. All you really gotta do, is take that wire (connects to parking brake) and hook it up to your clocks power wire. All i did was slightly loosen the ebrake cable, so when its up one notch, it does not engage the rear brakes. This way, i can have the parking brake up and watch dvds and stuff at the same time. U just gotta get used to the "brake" light always being on.

I understand how the e-brake sensor could work to tell if the car is in park for a OEM installed DVD player. But how does an aftermarket deck know if the brake is on or not. I mean, the radio works wether the car is on off in park or moving. What special wire do you hook up for a DVD player that a regular HU doesn't need? And why can't you just modify this wire instead of playing with the brake cable?

After market DVD players all include this wire and it is illegal for any stereo shop to not hook it up.

Thanks for the reply. So with a JIY job you can bypass it to begin with.

Is this feature actually in the screen / monitor or in the dvd unit? (assuming that some systems have separate components)

its not in the screen of anything.. you cut your parking brake wire and hook it to the wire coming from the screen.. the light is there because of the parking brake light... which can be disabled as well..
in either case if you wanted to do it yourself it wouldnt be very hard to do assuming this is the mechanism they use.. all you'd need is a constant 12V to connect the wire to.. any C12 would do.
