View Full Version : Is there a time limit for charging me with the ticket?

As some of you may know, I got a ticket for doing 74mph on route 80, a 65mph zone. Now I have called the Mt. Olive court several times already to schedule a court appearance, but they keep telling me that they haven't received the ticket from the officer. I got the ticket on January 9th. It's been almost a month, and they just keep telling me to call back. Isn't there any kind of law (at least in NJ) saying that they can't charge me with a ticket after a certain amount of time since I got the ticket? Seems ridiculous that I have to wait so long just to get them to have me on record. Plus, I'm at school, so it's not easy to just go to Mt. Olive to show up in court (they only do Mondays, they said!). Anyone know of any way that I can maybe convince to drop the ticket without a court appearance?

See if they'll let you talk to a lawyer. Whether it be on your own, or one of theirs.

Where in NJ are you? I drive rt 80 every day from exit 66 to 48 in the morning and reverse at night. You're lucky they just increased the speed limit or it would have worse. I don't think there is any statute of limitations, just keep bugging them. Make sure you take it to court though, they'll prob knock off the points and give you a b.s. fine instead.

I'm not sure what exit it was, but it's around Mount Arlington. After the cop pulled me over, I saw another cop (westbound side) about a mile or two down, if that helps.
I also checked the Motor Vehicle's website, and it indicated that if the speed limit was exceeded by 1~14mph, then it's 2 points. 15~24 (i think) mph, it's 4 points. And 5 points for 25MPH and over. Is that true? So if i were to go to court (they still haven't gotten the ticket from the officer yet), then it's only a matter of dropping 2 points, right?

I had the exact same problem when I got my ticket for allegedly going 67 in a 40, it took the officer 2 weeks to get it in, but in your case, the officer might have lost "your" ticket. Usually they give you a set time to schedule a court appearance, like 2-3 weeks, but I mean seriously, if it's been a month, he most likely lost it. But keep calling back and ask them if there is a set time for you to schedule a appearance after you recieved a ticket. Cops are people too and no they are not perfect and they do lose paper work.

yeah it's 2 points , but i believe the fine double in 65mph zone?
since you only speeding 9mph, it should not be hard to get that 2 points drop, depend on how you talk. But prepare to pay some more if that happens.

yes you are right, 65mph zones double the fines, just like construction zones. there should be a date on the ticket, but keep calling the court they will eventually give you a date. 2 points is nothing to get dropped, i wouldn't worry, just bring money cause they will give you some sort of fine. prob like $70 or so.
