I just had a few questions that I thought people on here could help me out with.

1. When painting a car, is is necessary to sand all the factory
color down the the primer, or just the areas that need
dent repair and body filler before putting on the primer?
(I have seen process pictures that show it being done
both ways)

2. What is used to mold body parts?; like side skirts so that
there is no visible line where they stop.

3. For repair of fiberglass, what is used to fix cracks and
bad spots? Also, when painting a fiberglass body kit
a different color, is it required to sand off all the original
color before laying down more primer and a new color?

1.) I would think you'd have to sand it down

2.)I believe bondo is used

3.) They use fiberglass or bondo repair cracks and bad spots and I'm pretty sure they'd have to sand off the orginal color also

I'm pretty sure those are the correct answers, but I'm not an expert on autobody so I could be wrong

Take a look at some of my body kit installs at www.street-concepts.net

when molding a kit my typical materials list would include

fusor panel bonding adhesive
fusor seam sealer
fiberglass mat
fiberglass resin
duraglass filler
medium weight filler
glazing filler
40 and 80 grit sandpaper
laquer thinner
primer

You should be using a panel bonding adhesive to first glue the parts to the car and then allow 24 hrs to dry before you start blending the pieces together. 3M also makes a good panel bonding adhesive. Both brands require a special applicator gun.

Also once the body work is done it is advisable to primer the car and get a week worth of driving in to make sure everything holds up. It is not fun to paint twice because something cracked.

I just need to know this because I am getting into learning how to paint and what not, so I need all the info I can get

pretty soon I am going to get a grivity-fed gun and buy some
hoods and fenders at a junk yard and start learning
