I am kinda new to modifying cars, I have $6000 to spend and want to get my car to as well performing as possible with that money. I wanted to put a blitz body kit on, and a turbo charger, turbo timer, and blow off valve. What should I do/buy for that money, and what would the estimated horse power be after the mods?

Thank You,

J.J.

Honestly, if you want a GTS and have $6000 to spend on it, then don't get a GTS.

If you really like the looks of the GTS then go for it, but otherwise you can get a nicer car for another $6000, one that handles better and goes faster in a straight line.

With the status of Turbo development for the GTS, I would seriously consider if it is worth it. The XS kit, with install would probably eat up that 6K pretty quick (if they sell it). Perhaps if David Draper and Dark Star finish the turbo project, or if Blitz gets that SC to market then it may be better off. But you may be in for a disapointment if you plan to go that route.

Celica is a great car, but that extra $6k buys you a Z or WRX. But hey, if you want to Turbo a GTS, more power to you. Just don't forget a LSD if you do. You will need it for traction.

Wow Autxr,

I applaud you on your unbiased answer. Especially as moderator I'd expect you to be totally Pro-Celica no matter what.
I spend a lot of time on the Camaro board, as that's what I drive now, but everybody there is too anal to admit that there are better cars out there!

He definately didn't mean camaro... i think your options are still limited... with 30k instead of 24k you can get an s2000 (it'd be tight budgeting) but thats really all i could think of out handling wise... the new kids on the block , rsx wrx and lancers are all the same price as the celi.

If I didn't have a wife that happened to like (fell secure and all that stuff) new cars, I'd never waste the money on a new one.

While I do like my Celica, I find myself constantly disappointed by it's lack of torque. I'd look for a car with some low end that is also nimble....

The Celica is one of the slickest handling cars out there, but in stock trim it really needs a LSD. Had I been as serious about autocrossing 2 years ago as I am now, I'd never have gotten the Celica. I'd have gotten the much less attractive Type R simply for the LSD and performance potential.

Right now I'd probably get a WRX or a SE-R Spec V, though neither will likely be as nimble as the Celica (the WRX handles a bit pigish with slow steering, but it will hook up and will hold in the turns, it just doens't feel as good).

If I wanted to mod a car, then I would get a cheap one and spend the money on mods. I can get a used BMW 325 for pennies and you can do some very nice things to an E36 BMW.

My goal is to go fast (in a straight line and in the turns), and there are better, cheaper alternatives to the Celica for doing that.

Look into a used E36 M3 or a Supra. You can get a nice one (either) for $25,000 or less, the M3 will be eaiser to find, and be a nicer car the the Celica hands down. You just won't have a 3/36,000 bumper to bumper warranty.

Remember, paying $200 a month to repair a car is almost always cheaper than a new car payment.

I think a Spec V wouldn't be a bad option. It's got a LSD plus more displacement to work with. On top of that, the compression ratio isn't through the roof. The powerband is more useable and to top it off, it's only about $18K. With a turbo and a suspension upgrade, you'll hang with the GTS or even beat them.

I got into motorcycles about 5 years ago and the whole performance/adrenaline rush just puts cars to shame. That's why I personally am not that concerned about sickeningly fast cars. I replied to the same post in Mods, but I see nothing wrong with putting the $6k into mods. I bought my GT-S because it looks amazing and is relatively quick. Put $6000 in mods on top of that and you'll have a car that not only will be quicker, but can be customized to your liking. Nothing is worse than having a car that you have no further money to mod (like me right now). I like the whole new car/warranty thing as well. Plus I'm anal about my car like the peace of mind that nobody has owned it before me. I also don't feel that the S2000 is a viable every day car. I just run into too many situations where I need the cargo space or want to take a third person along. Also, if winter is an issue, cars like the S2000, Supras, RX-7's, MR2's and the like really lose their functionality.

i personally like celicas and since there is a lack of aftermarket, that makes "hooking" up the celica that much more kew... since you can say, i made this a bad ass car with little to work with; so you can be prouder about your accomplishments, and it still looks better and faster than some cars with hella aftermarket,,ie H & A.. BUT if you are looking to spend all that cheese and don't decide on a celi, maybe the Z,S2K, or whatever you want...IMHO.....good luck....late.

Ok, today when I was driving home from school, I saw only 1 celica, and a ****load of Preludes, Integras and tons of Civics... Thats one of the reasons why I bought the Celica, its IMO the best looking car for the price, and you don't see that many around, sure its not fast, but I think most people who bought this car didn't buy it for the speed, they bought it cause they saw the car and loved it.... As for mods, I kinda like not having 20 different types of intakes and 20 different exhausts and whatnot, this way, there aren't alot of choices to make.. Sure we don't have the turbos and chargers, but honestly, how many people actually buy them?? Plus less mods equals less money for me to spend... Cause modding is an addiction I tell you, once you start, you just can't stop =)

If you wanna go fast, dont look at the celica...for now.

Id go with either a eclipse GS-T, or the lancer EVO VII(not out yet), WRX (i dont like the appearance, not for me). With 6 grand on this puppies it can give porche a run for its money.

Dont get and Eclipse GS-T. If you have ever heard of the many problems with it, including crankwalk, you would know. My friend had a GS-T and had to sell it after 2 engine rebuilds which ended up costing him about $ 6000. Another problem with mitsubishis in general, including the eclipse is their resale value. My friend only got $6700 for his '96, that sucks. As for the EVO VII, it seems to be a monster, around 250 hp, all-wheel drive, for about $30,000. Hopefully Mitsubishi will improve their quality by 2003. I suggest if you plenty of $$ to spend, get a WRX or a GT-S and go all out with mods. Although the EVO VII will be around the same price, I dont thnk you want to buy it in its first year of production, due to potential problems.

dont forget about INTERIOR!!

before i got my celica, i was looking at like an integra GSR or civic Si or other cars. the integra's interior is THE NASTIEST IVE EVER SEEN! the top part friggin points out like you can damage your face on it!

i think Honda's interiors are very plain, conservative. but i havent seen all honda interiors so dont flame me. toyota put a lot of love into designing the celica interior, the seats, the overall look of the layout of the interior. its very very very nice and i cant stand other cars' interiors. the supra's interior is pretty cool too.

outside, the celica just looks good. you have to admit it, its dam beautiful.

if you want a lot power, get a muscle car. if you want power, looks (inside and out), get the celica. celica's arent that slow. in a drag race, they can keep up and sometimes beat stock WRX's (from what i have heard). in the curves, i dont know, but i do know the handling is very nice in stock form.

if you want serious speed, buy a GT, and turbocharge it. hopefully wctoyotasport will have theirs out soon. hmm...GT-S is about 3K more than a GT...turbo will cost around 4K i'd figure. that'd leave you with 5K left. that's an LSD, low comp pistons, all the goodies. :) You could easily make 13's, maybe 12's. now thats what i'm talking about. :)
