I have spent quite some time perusing forums looking for info on the 205 vs 225 tire size debate. So far it doesn't look like much of a concensus has been made on the boards. Any have anything enlightening to say?

I am running a GT in stock. I am leaning toward staying with the 225 size that I ran for the past few months (donor set given to me) simply to maintain some consistency. I know how the shifting and power go with this tire size. I was interested in the extra acceleration I might get with the 205s.

Thanks in Advance

I was wondering about using tires in 225/45/15 size. I think Hoosier, Yokohama and Kuhmo all make tires in this size. With a 7 or 8 inch wheel, you'd have a wider tread, possibly the same or lighter weight than the O.E. 16" setup and slightly reduced gearing too.

Anyone else think this size could offer both better grip and acceleration?

Edit: I assume that you're running 225/50/15 series tires since that's what most of the debate has been concerning.

Yes, the 225/45-15 opions offer a theoretical "best of both worlds." The thought is that the 205/50 will offer better transitional response. The smaller tire will also heat up faster on the autocross course, so you get the tire working for you sooner. Since runs are short, odds are it will not over heat.

On a road course the bigger tire might handle the thermal load better.

It is still an ongoing debate, and until someone wants to foot the bill for a set of each and run them side by side, we will never know.

My guess is that 225 front and 205 rear is the best combo, but I haven't tried it. I think B1mmer did, with some success.

That said, I'm currently set to run 205 Ecsta V700's locally and Hoosier 205's nationally.
