I was reading the article on the tuner challenge for the 4 cyl cars. I saw some SVT Focus, numerous Acura RSX, S2000, EVO's etc. I was wondering why no Celicas, especially given it was judged on a road couse. i XS Engineering turbo Celica probably would have done well there.

Because this was a battle of HIGHLEY modified compacts.
I don't think there is a Celica out there that meat their criteria (sp?) unfortunally.
the celica is reaching the end of its model run, it had its tiem but the truth of the matter is that there are other cars out now that just are better :)

The Celica can't compete with what's out there now.

yup. i seen some clips on tv. all those 4 cylinders were highly modified. the S2000 with comptech supercharger and engines that have been bored and stroked. alot of money went into these cars and knowing how the turbo and S/C just came out it the celica was just too slow to compete.

I opened up my beloved car and drive after seeing the promising cover hoping to see the celica, matrix, or mr2 spyder competing with the other cars in the shootout, but where did it go.
I saw a thread a little whiles up saying how it wasn't modified enough, etc... and it can't compete????
If you saw the times that the cars were pulling that would be laughable. All modified. The celica would be competing with these other FWD cars that they grouped, not the RWD S2000, WRX, Lancer, and Miata.
Volkswagon GT1: 1/4 Mile: 15.3
Ford Focus SVT: 1/4 Mile: 14.9
Neon: 1/4 Mile: 15.5
RSX: 1/4 Mile 14.4
Civic Si: 1/4 Mile: 14.5
Mini Cooper S: 1/4 Mile: 15.7
Etc....
These are power numbers and they have other data for handling upgrades and braking upgrades, all we know clearly in stock form the Celica is superior without the upgrades to begin with. They couldn't find a TRD Sportivo Celica GT-S at least for someone to run at the track????
I am just wondering why there were two SVT Focus, two Civics, Three RSX yet not a single toyota? And on top of that the MR2 Spyder that had the turbo upgrade and did 0-60 in around 5 flat cost less than the 70,000$$ ticketed for the S2000 upgrades and nearly matches its performance numbers, would have been a better challenge than a C230 Sport??
The only logic I can think of is the tuners needed some advertising and aftermarket for celica gt-s is not on par with the others, but still, one toyota would have been nice.

It wasn't up to Toyota, it was up to one of the tuners. Jackson Racing, Cobb Tuning, Vishnu, etc etc. I guess there's no one that has a car they wanted to show off.
Long live Conebasher!!!
