Hey guys
Pretty quiet in here lately....anyways, the other night, I was driving back home from work and there was one of those new Mazda 6 hatchbacks next to me. For some reason, as I got next to him, he pulled away...pretty quick, but I didn't bother going with him. We got caught at the next set of traffice lights so I figure since he wants to play...I'll play a little bit and see what these new Mazda 6's can do.
Lights go, I just take off slowly and keep it in 1st...he punches it, so I punch it as well. Shift at 8 and land just out of lift...but no worries, wasn't really trying to land the 1-2. Hit lift in 2nd and pull easily, but then when I hit 8k revs....the revliminiter kicks in??!? I'm like huh?!! and I quickly shift to 3rd. We finished at about 140 and I was up maybe half a car I guess when we slowed donw....maybe not even.....not much, but then it was just for fun, and I didn't really push it that much, and my lift played up.
Why would the rev limiter kick in like that? weird. I had been driving for a good 15 minutes, so the engine should have been warmed up enough. Anyyywaysss.....I was a little surprised with the mazda 6.....they have a bit of power. Anyone test driven one?

hmm looking at the specs, just under 1400kg kerb weight and puts out 122 kw. If you raced him properly, should've beaten him by the end of first gear easy.

Man that sounds pretty wierd, i dont see why the limiter should have kicked in like that....maybe its protection as something was not right.....u know how these "smarter" engines work and all....

I test drove one when I was looking for a replacement for my Celica.
They go alright, but 122kw is not much in a car that weighs so much. And the activematic transmission is good to use, but I can't help thinking that it saps a fair amount of power.
I had jumped straight out of my Celica into the 6 so was able to make a pretty good comparison. In terms of performance, the Celica is a lot quicker than the 6. Once the 6 gets wound up, you get a feeling that it is struggling (very thrashy sounding engine) and it feels underpowered.
The salesman tried to tell me that it is quicker than Celica - but he had never driven a Celica and had only "raced" some kid driving one. I am quite confident a manual Celica would comfortably beat the activematic 6 in any situation.
If you do the sums, compare 140kw in 1,100kg with 122kw in 1,400kg. Celica should win hands down.
The 6 is a nice car though - pleasant to drive and surprisingly roomy.

Guys let me tell you first hand that the mazda6 is no match for the celica, raced one from about 2nd (60-70kph) to the end of my 4th gear (170) and he was behind me..... somewhere. Once you hit lift, its all over :)

Yeah....I was back about a car when he punched it....I was being a little bit blase about the whole thing....like I was just thinking "whatever....just a mazda6...should I even bother". When lift hit, I pulled him in easily and got in front.....and then my rev limiter went on (??!) and took me out of lift again. I was just thinking whaa th..?!? And was more concerned about my car than the race at that point.
:)
It was near my area.....hopefully I'll come across the same car some time and give him a proper demo of the celica. heheh

hey guys,
i reckon since we dun have out right power for our car (i mean we need to rev it up), so to win a race really depends on if we'r ready to race or not. I mean if i was crusin' in 4th or 5th and some car comes up and start pull away real hard, it'll take me at least 1 sec to think "umm do i wanna go?"..then i'll shift down and start pulling, so it'll be slower. where as if i was planning to race this dude i'll keep it in like 2nd gear and rev it just before 6000, pull up next to him and give him a look, then bang..lift hit and she's away!
Alot of people think our car is slow due to the above reason i'll say. But when the car is rollin' and u'll staying just before lfit, then u step on it our car is pretty fast. I had race a few WRXs and 200sx doing that and alot of time its neck to neck if u'r shifting right! what u guys reckon?

I have had some great runs with (stock) WXR's, and yup its very close when your ready and at 6k. Dunno about 200sx though as both my mates have mods and cane my ass....

I did a little run with my friend's 200sx ...he's only got an exhaust. It was from a stop....and he took me by.....I'd say maybe a car....hehe, maybe he was going easy on me! But I didn't land the 1-2, so there was no chance anyways. I'd say that from a roll it probably woulda been closer as long as you keep it in lift and you're at your power band when the race starts.....but I'd expect the 200sx to be faster....
btw....how easy do you guys find landing the 1-2? Any tips? For me...I need to take the revs almost up to the rev-limiter...or even bounce off it....to make the 1-2. Is it possible to make it shifting at say 8? Cause I mustn't shift fast enough! Ah well, still learning!

i can land 1-2 shift in lift pretty much 9 outta 10 times, but it took some practice...brennyboy if u bounce off it you won't make it.. also shift just around 8300 and slip the clucth abit u'll be fine...
on a roll if u lend 1-2 and 2-3 shift in lift u'll supprise alot of stock WRXs and 200sx, but they have to be stock
