im really thinking of getting this hood but do you think i need hood pins for the fiberglass hood? im sure veilside reinforces the latch and is probally metal. all the veilside hoods ive seen havent had hood pins.
how much would this weigh also? Are there anymore pics of it on an actual car.
its either this or a normal oem cf hood...

Well, since it's fiberglass, I would say that you wouldn't need any hood pins since it wouldn't be as light as CF.

it's pretty light. The veilside rsx hood weights 10lbs.

I don't think so man, plus you have to add the shipping from Japan, Is not a cheap hood.

It's as light as a CF hood guys...CF hoods are fiberglass under the CF layer remember. My cousin's Fiberglass hood on his mustang is lighter than my invader hood

is it strong? I'd get it if it was a cf one

it really doesnt matter. usually japanese fiberglass is strong but really thin. at high speeds, i would definately recommend hoodpins because you dont want to end up like me. ( CF hood flying off at 90) it also really depends how strong the latches are on your hood. if they are weak, make them stronger..

it is crazy to drive at high speed with FRP hood and without hood pins.
for your safety, hood pins are definitely needed..

I'm really liking that whole new bodykit. If I eventually turbo my car and keep it around for a while...that kit might be in order.

fiberglass hoods might be as light as a CF, but are definately not as strong. Remember CF has a higher tensile strength that the rated capcity of metal with the same dimensions. There is no way that fiberglass can match that. And YES, get some hood pins. Due to the fact that those hoods are lighter, the chance of it lifting and catching air underneath are much greater than that of a stock hood. My $0.02

The carbon fiber used in hoods adds little if any strength to the hood. Other than Benen, which is true carbon fiber, you are dealing with a fiberglass hood, with a thin layer (most likely single ply) of carbon fiber over the top. I have a single ply CF chain guard on my bike. I can take the thing and twist it all around if I want to. Carbon fiber, like any composite material, is strong in some directions but not in other. Where carbon fiber excels is tensile strength, so if something hits your hood, it will most likely stay in one piece.

I'm willing to bet that the Veilside frp hood is stronger than any VIS, Fiber Images, OE Tuning, etc. hood out there... as said in the above post the carbon fiber on these aftermarket hoods does absoulutely nothing for strength as it is there for mere asthetics. If you want a strong carbon fiber hood it would have to be done in a dry weve lamination process; but expect to pay at least $1-2K.

for those whose cf hood unlatched and fuged up the windshield,
who installed your hood? i had my invader installed by the shop who did my bodykit and up to 102 mph w/o hoodpins, still ok. if your guys' hood were professionally installed than i better get some pins!!

It has nothing to do with who installed it. It doesn't matter than the latch is metal, it matters more that the material holding the latch to the hood is sufficient. If there's little fiberglass holding the latch to the hood, it will likely crack and come up at speed; I guess you could have a bodyshop add material around the latch and reinforce it. The Veilside is just as light as any carbon fiber hood anyone here has. The Veilside is not gonna crack if an apple falls on it or crack under any less pressure than a carbon fiber hood would. The carbon fiber on VIS and everyone elses hoods is for aesthetics alone, it adds no (noticable) strength, flexibility, nothing.
Use hood pins if you don't wanna wreck your ride. Your hood may not have come up yet, but it might, do you really wanna risk it? Eventually it will.

I dunno, every case I've heard about with a CF hood coming open was due to improper latching. I have yet to hear someone claim that their hood flew open because the latch broke off the latch piece on the hood. I mean, it is weaker than stock, but I don't think you can say "eventually it will."
Oh well, either way, I think I'm gonna cave in and get some hoopins. That flexing the hood makes at 80-90 make me pretty nervous... :)
