Surprise Surprise!
If they keep pushing down the HP that thing will be a highly modified four-wheeler :D
Free service for four years sounds good though, and $500 is a good start on mods :)

They probably had one or two maybe more ringers/Factory freaks that they can't duplicate now. Every body is in to dyno their car so they can't hide the fact that there cars aren't making the numbers the earlier pre production models were making.

what was mazda originally claiming horsepower to be???
Keyshawn
08-25-2003, 07:16 AM
Mazda needs to try to get those HP numbers back up to their original projections. Power isn't everything, but it's all about perception, and Mazda's definitely losing that battle against the 350Z right now.

250hp then they changed it to 247hp and now 238hp

damn that sux....not sure if i still wanna buy one now.....too bad it's such a sweet car and extremely fun to drive
cool2miketlu
08-25-2003, 08:47 AM
but if that 238HP is to the wheels thats still higher than a brand spanking new 350Z I saw dynoed at a shop. I guess they tried to pull a Hyundai misquote HP on us :D
larryd
08-25-2003, 09:06 AM
Its not 238 to the wheels, thats crank hp.
Burrcold
08-25-2003, 09:09 AM
it's like 180 to the wheels :(
Bi-Mon-Sci-Fi-Con
08-25-2003, 09:47 AM
Even 238hp is high. The S2000 has 240hp and puts down ~200whp. So either the RX8's drivetrain is pure sh*t, or power is more like 210 crank hp.

350Z > RX-8

Well, Mazda of Japan still has the power rated at 250PS, (248HP).
There was also a hold up at the ports because of emmissions. The problem most likely is a hanidcapped ECU cuz of the U.S.'s gay emissions policy.
In any event, the RX8 6spd is dynoing anywhere from 172-182whp :chuckles:
And the fastest 1/4 mile times by actual people are ranging from 15.2 - 16.5
Lower the cars price by $5000.00 and it would be a good car.

I think it's funny that Mazda is still sticking by their 0-60 in 5.9 even with their admitted hp discrepensy

Its a sweet looking car but at that price... why not buy a GTS, or RSX Type S, or an SRT4 even. I mean there is a lot of competition out there.

that's a killer blow for a n/a car. i'd buy-back and wait for a rumored turbo rX-7, at least you can just pump up the boost on that to make up for misrated power :)
btw, i know fwd dynoes better than rwd and everything. but 180 to the wheels from 240hp is horrible.

How does the buy-back offer work? Does Mazda give a refund and then try to sell the used RX-8 at a used car price?
Hmmm... Maybe I can pick up an RX-8 for a good price. :D

Take 12chp away from your GTS and you'll have the same HP as a Rav4. Think about that. :gap:

My m8s stock S2000 dyno'd 193 at the wheels.. and that was 237bhp. So 180 does sound a little low.. not too far off though.

That's a bit harsh. Hehe, I always keep my catalytic converter on every car I've modded because I don't want to be too fuked up to the environment. That doesn't make me a tree-hugging hippie.:D

I would sell the car back.
BUT I think Mazda should give the RX-8 peeps an Mazdaspeed exhaust, and intake system to make up for the loss in power .... wouldnt giving each of them this cheaper option make sense?

Planet Earth aside, the bottom line is this.
RX-8 = new Renesis Rotary Engine putting out 260hp Naturally aspirated using a new intake timing system developed by Mazda. This was the most anticipated car of the year because of the revival of the rotary, the gorgeous looks, and the return of Mazda to the super car world
Then Reality hit
RX-8 = Another Over claimed Mazda victim, not once, not twice, but three times over rated with the horsepower, numerous intake timing problems during pre-release of engine, still gorgeous, over hyped, under powered, and extremely expensive for what you get.
Conclusion:
Mazda needs to get there act together or they might see there futures with the tuner world dim slowly.

Depends on who's in charge of the US at the time. An environmentalist like Gore might not have made the same decision.
