The rear is hideous. I can live with the front.

The headlights resemble the celica headlights. Just a little bit toned down.

This is kinda cool. http://www.toyota.com/html/shop/look_ahead/fxs.html
"This high-performance concept is perfectly balanced between the front and rear tires and boasts an all-aluminum 300-hp 4.3-liter V8 with a 6-speed sequential manual transmission. Clutchless shifting via buttons mounted on the steering wheel allows the driver ultimate control at high-speeds."

It's decent-looking for what it is: a car intended for middle-age peeps/families that looks somewhat sporty. I still don't know why Toyota has gotten into the habit of making cars with less power than others in their class. It can't be that hard for Toyota to be a little more competitive in the power department. Horsepower numbers sell a helluva LOT of cars in the USA, even with middle-age peeps.

I imagine the reason is that other car manufacturers are more dependant on those HP numbers to sell their cars. Since Toyota just rides on their quality reputation they will still draw in alot of buisiness without having to be the best performer. Your average driver is also going to be more concerned with having a car with lower insurance cost and good gas mileage. Both of which usually get worse with more power. They also have Lexus for people who want better and are able to spend more $ to get it. Keeping some distance between the two lines helps both sell better.

Good points. But I think it would be beneficial, and quite easy, for Toyota to be more competitive with other cars in the power department and still have good gas mileage and what not. Honda has done that with its Accord and Nissan has done it with the Altima. With all the other things that Toyota does well, increasing power would put their cars head and shoulders above their competitors, instead of 'just keeping up' like they've become accustomed to.
my dad was trying to convince me to get that instead of the rsx-s

If you think that's ugly you obviously haven't seen the new Echo hatchback they are now selling in Canada

I believe the Echo hatchback is the same as the Vitz sold in Europe....which will be sold as a Scion in the U.S. .....call it what you will but I would rather crawl on my knees to get somewhere than drive that piece of ****

I guess I'm the only person who likes both. I like the camry minus the ugly grill, and I love that echo hatchback, a million times better looking then the coupe. What sucks for the solara is no 5spd or 6spd manual like the accord, altima, 6, and maxima.

:werd: no manual tranny sucks. I actually like the look of the new solara, much better. Looks like the sc430 but longer from the rear.

thats pretty cool it has the sequential gear shifting... u dont have to worry about miss shifts anymore cause the only reason u would use the clutch is for downshifting

The only time I would ever accept a sequential manual shifter on a car is if it is so freakin fast that it takes all of my concentration just to control it. No clutch makes driving a normal car boring.

they already have one for the older one. If its the same lay out it might still fit or just need some minor adjustments.
With TRD supercharger it will put down some serious #'s, and with a nice lip kit / or body kit .... it might look alot better.
I would drive it.
i don't think it looks bad. i think toyota designers got lazy because not only the exterior but the interior also has very similiar sc430 cues. i wonder if one could swap the 300 hp V8 in the sc into that thing

that's too bad, I personally loved the design of the 2k Solara. It's a decent car with lots of options (incl. the supercharger, which does it wonders). As usual, it looks like crappy car design prevails once again.

I drove a Sport model in Black. Nice suspension tuning, felt firmer and flatter than Mk.I Solara. The VVT-i is matched well with the new 5A/T (it isn't an SM/T, not even close). Exiting turns in 1st or 2nd will activate T/C, which cuts in too soon but can be disabled. It's torquey at low rpm's, and felt like a high 6 or low 7 sec to 60 car, and maybe low 15's in the quarter. Very quiet under acceleration and high speeds. I actually like the rear design, but most cars look great in Black. Still, I wish the front looked a bit more different than the Camry. And at the price, where are the HID's? It's a great chick car, but way too big and heavy for most enthusiasts. My 2

for what it is - a camry coupe, its an excellent car... I bet it will get real fast with TRD s/c which of course they will have ready within months I bet ;-)

I think they just believe what works for lexus would work great for toyota. I think the SC430 is pretty overpriced so why not get a bargin Lexus? The former solara also had tons of styling cues from the previous Lexus SC, so it's only fitting that it looks like the next SC.

The older Solara's weren't bad. Nice, if a bit tight, interior and they felt way more connected to the road then the Camry. I just wish for this one they had put a V6 pushing 250 to 260hp. 220 seems too low.

Let me just say that the Solara looks far better in person than it does in pictures.
The front end looks extremely sleek, and the headlamps don't look as bad as I'd thought.
The tail is a bit like the SC430's (whether that's bad or not is up to you), and it would benefit from having one more exhaust pipe (only has one), but beyond that, this was another conservative, tasteful, safe style from Toyota.
I must say it looks far better than the previous Solara, however.
