Wheni cleaned mu mafs i put the cue tip everywhere on there and stuck the q tip in every hole and cleaned it till every hole was clean, make it spotless. Dont forget to unplug the battery and plug it back in to reset the ecu. I cleaned mine 2 months ago, and the cel ligh hasent come back on since i cleaned it.

anybody got some step by step instructions on how to do this? I might be able to use this in a "help me" type page for this forum.

Thanks,

go here for some reference:butterfly valve w/maf sensor location (http://www.newcelica.org/other/installs/butterfly/install.htm)

it's a REAL easy procedure. be sure to disconnect the negative battery terminal and keep it away from metal.

the part is right on top of the intake pipe (right behind the intake "box"). it's held in with 2 screws and once you pull it out you'll see an inch long metal sensor with an amber (or black if it's dirty) bulb at the end. if you have an electronics cleaner (from radioshack) or isopropyl alcohol and some q-tips it's easy to clean. just be gentle with it because it's a very delicate part.

my car had a wierd flat spot (or engine bogging) around 5000 rps that a new clutch and new lift bolts couldn't resolve. none of the techs could figure it out or even acknowedge it. i did some research and cleaned the sensor myself and low and behold...the car runs great. no hesitation and the power is smooth like it should be.

There are also some parts inside the main shaft that need to be cleaned. Be very careful because they're just thin wires. The most important part to clean, though, is the amber bulb (temp sensor) in the above pics.

My friends rav4 runs like sh!t it only has 26000miles on it. When you start up the car you have to rev it or the engine doesnt turn over. The highest I went was about 50 or 60mph and then it just barely goes up anymore.

Would cleaning the MAF and throttle body help?

great pics, anyone want to take a pic of the location zoomed out a bit? Or the location on a CAI.

Blue Bomber,
The most important part is inside the plastics! The amber bulb is the intake air temp sensor, the little wires inside the plastic housing are the actual MAF sensor. These get dirty and the ECU can't tell how much air is actually flowing into the engine. Cleaning the amber bulb is important too, but not as much as the wires. Can you take before/after pics of the wires too?
