Hey guys...just a couple questions about hte reliability of the Celica's engine components.

1.) Have any of you had experience with the stock Piston rods? Are they good? Weak? How much aggressive driving would it take to bust one? Do the Celica's have a history of breaking internals? Woudl regular agressive driving wera out the rods enough to break or otherwise damage the rods?

2.) valves? Any history of damaging valves?

3.) How doe shte rev limiter work? I know that it is controlled by the ECU...but what does it do? What does it cut off?

Thanks . Any info on these questions would be greatly appreciated ASAP!.

1) Stock internals are strong. However, I remember reading about a GT-S that threw a rod and it led to an oil fire which destroyed the car. Do a seach and you may find it on this site.

2) Valves will be damaged in an over-rev situation.

3) The rev-limiter cuts ignition and fuel delivery until the revs are back below the threshold.

Thanks. Anyone else with other thoughts?

Deaks2 summed it up pretty well.

If I am thinking of the same Celica that Deaks is referring to, the car threw a rod for no reason while the person was in neutral coasting off an off ramp. It was obviously a freak occurance that resulted from a factory defective engine.

The internals of the Celica are tough. Agressive driving every second of the day isn't going to cause a rod to break. Revving the crap out of the engine and racing all the time isn't going to cause a valve to bend. There are only ways these components could possably be damaged. One way is a miss-shift, which no engine can survive. The other is demanding too much power from the engine from a turbo/supercharger or NO2.

With a stock engine, you can beat the crap out of the car and the last thing you will have to worry about will be bent valves or broken connecting rods.

Is it possible that the rev limiter could go out on a car and allow the revs to go over redline?

I've never heard of the rev limiter going out, but the rev limter doesn't prevent damage from an overrev during a misshift.

the chances of the rev limiter going out, is pretty slim. something would have to mess the ecu up, to have that happen. OR, a misshift will cancel the rev limiter, and cause the rpm to pass the red line.

It has to be a really bad mis-shift also... I was cruisin @ around 80 on the highway went to drop it into 4th and accidentally dropped it in 2nd (and almost crapped my pants)... Revved up to at least 9K but luckily i didnt let the clutch totally up yet and was able to push it down quickly. No apparent valve damage... i mean no tap or anything and that was over 3000 miles ago

So i guess you could say the internals are pretty strong.

daksGT has no rev limiter. I am not sure why thou :)
