View Full Version : Car is going in for warranty work...

I finally made an appointment to have my belt tensioner replaced, but Toyota City said they need to reproduce the sound I'm hearing in the morning in order to replace the part. Apparently they can't take my word for it that I know what it is, which makes sense, but sucks royal.
That means I gotta drop my car off the evening before and let it sit on the lot that night so they can start her up in the morning. I'm a little wary of that, but I don't have a choice. So, this Sunday night I'll be Celica-less. Then, after they hear the sound in the engine bay, they'll order the part and I gotta come pick my car up and bring it back yet another day. I wish it was as easy as telling them what I think is wrong, having them order the part now, and dropping it off for replacement on Monday, but it doesn't work that way. :(
Hopefully I get everything resolved quick and effectively. I don't wanna waste a whole lotta time on this, and I don't want my car to be down for more than a day.

I have taken my car in 3 times for the belt tensioner problem and they always give the line " We cant seem to locate it" or " Our mechanic didnt see anything wrong". ****ers!! They replaced the belts last time i went in and that cured it for a little while. I told them it was the belt tensioner and there had been multiple reports of the same fault but they refused to believe me or even check out the database. I go to Toyota city. If you have better luck with somewhere else, let me know!! Please?:stupid:

i dont understand why they have to make it so hard for warranty work to be done,,,i know for a fact that they set aside warranty work car and work on the cars that are not warranty.
clint,,i had the same problem with the tensioner and they agreed after about 30 mintues of talking to them that it should be in warranty, they agreed. they had the nerve to make it sound like they are doing me a favor by covering the tensioner under warranty. i told them they should cover it under warranty with no questions asked, its a manufacture defect. i am going in to service the celica this thursday , tehy finally called us that the parts came in .....they still havent fixxed the weird noise from the clutch area when i start from first to second,,they just shrugged it off say ing they dont know what it is,,obviously they dont try hard enough or they dont care,,or they just dont want to bother with it...i am beinging to think that they only take care of lexus owners much better then toyota owners....
i was at a ground breaking ceremony and was talking to a service rep about my situation and he said if you had a lexus this would have never happen to you,,,
anyhow i will stand up for you clint and if you need me to clear teh warranty work for your tensioner tehn i will go with you to testify...

I just got my car serviced two weeks ago at windward toyota for the belt tensioner. They didn't give me any problems with the warranty. Actually, they didn't even give me any hassles. I just brought the car in, told them I heard a chirping sound coming from the tensioner and they diagonosed the problem, told me to bring the car back later when the parts come in. The parts came in, dropped the car off 4hours later they told me it was ready for pick up. Hope this helps.

just to let you know we did a tensioner and belt today for the second time. it still has the sound so the tech spayed some silicone lube behind the waterpump pulley and the sound went away. i ordered a pump for the car, i'll post when we install it. by the way its a GT but the tensioners look the same. i'm not diagnosing anything just passing some info. and you should'nt have any problems with toyota city.

Thanks for the info dude! I was hoping you'd see this post and give us some insight. Have you guys been able to really diagnose the problem? Is it just lube, or the part itself that's faulty? I don't want to continually bring the car in for it... sometimes in the morning it sounds like my neighbor's beater, and at traffic lights on the way to work ppl look at me funny. :(

Hey Clint, is the noise from the belt tensioner you're getting a high-pitched squeaking from the engine bay? I'm due for the servicing and I figured to ask about the squeaking and the foggy headlights.

thats the same type of noise the GT has. the lube he sprayed was to see if the noise goes away, its not a fix. i hope its the pump or we'll have a mad customer. and on the moisture in the headlights if the car is still under warranty then should be no problems. i just got one in for a 2000 GT.

oh no, I hope they figure it out the first time! Why does everyone on the board say there's a TSB for this thing? Yikes, I'm kinda worried now. I don't want a temporary fix. :(
Mitch, yeah like Jay said, it's the high pitched squeaking, not quite as bad as you hear on cars badly in need of a new timing belt, but bad enough.

How lucky is that? I have never had any part I needed in stock when I would go there. It's always been, 1 or 2 days to diagnose the problem, 2 weeks to get the parts in, then having to wait another week to get an apointment to get it fixed. Then having to get my car back 2 or 3 days after I take it in because nobody worked on it that day.

Hey Delo, when I dropped my car off last night I saw yours there. It was outside on jack stands, but I didn't get to take a close look at it. Any new parts in? It looks pitiful just sitting there with it's guts all torn out and limping on one leg.

yeah it does look pitiful....and so depressing!!! anyway, last time i talked to them...they told me all the parts are in except the engine...that was about a month ago so i hope it'll come in within the next 2 weeks....then say maybe another 2 weeks for the actual repair time?
