Anyone running or have any experense w/ the new tire aznies (i think) I've heard alot of good things about them. Thinking about switching in the summer to them but the treadwear is only 160 compared to the 200 on the A680's.

I've heard very good things about the Azenis. They appear to hold up well on track too. My student at VIR last December had them and they don't give up much to the normal R-tires (V700, Toyo RA1). I'll be getting a set for STS this year (ya hear that Scott?!? I've got a little somethin-somethin for you if you decide come play in STS this year :) )

treadwear is only 160 compared to the 200 on the A680's Can't really compare treadwear ratings from 2 different companies.

Like Matt said, you can't compare tread ratings between companies. My Yokohama A680's had a 160 rating though.

But yes, the Aziens are considered by most to be *the* STS tire.

And, Matt, do you really think if I show up for STS I'll be running some cheap tires? I had a dedicated set of tires for "street tire" class, you know I'll have them for STS.

Not sure what size though. I'd probably start with the 205/50-15 on the stock 15" wheels I already have. I'd consider upgrading to 16" wheels so I could run the 215 or 225 width rubber.

Might as well continue this conversation on list...

Is Rice still planning to co drive with you for 2002? If so, then you will have some competition.

I won't make a STS decision until the end of May (probably). I'll base it on how badly I get whipped at the Ft. Myers national tour and the Petersburg Pro.

I might do it sooner, but it's hard to justify spending money on the car when I have one that doesn't run (and needs all the same mods) and the $3880 that I owe Uncle Sam this year (long story there).

Sally finishes residency in June, so our budget will likely change then. This weekend we agreed that a 4 door E36 M3 might make a nice family car! Hard to say how long the Celica will be around.

His mom, believe it or not, just purchased a new MR Spyder and wants to learn to autocross. So the ones that she shows up to, he'll drive that. The one's she doesn't show to, he'll drive mine. Can't blame him, I'd pick the MR Spyder over an SE-R as well :D

and the $3880 that I owe Uncle Sam this year ouch :(

I've got no experience driving or riding on them in the rain, but by looking at the tread pattern, it probably wouldn't be my 1st choice for a rain tire. Full depth they probably aren't terrible.

From what I hear...

Avoid standing water.

On a wet road that is well drained you will be fine (race tires grip better in the wet than street tires), but if there is standing water (low spots on the highway, etc) then hold on tight, it's going to be a fun ride.

I would avoid these as daily driver tires if I lived in an area where it rained much.

Rice might also be driving Mom's old GS-R at some events too. It makes sense, it's well paxed in the new GS, he has wheels and stickies to fit it, and he certainly knows how to fix anything that goes wrong with it. As for the Spyder, it is a very sweet car. Hopefully when he brings it out, Eric will be at the event so I can go head to head with Rice, although the cars aren't quite equally prepped <grin>. - Aaron

I'll know how they are in 2 weeks. I've got a school on the 16th, with autox on the 17th.

I've only had them on the car for a few miles, but they feel like the Kumho V700s I borrowed last year. They have the same kind of grip feel. I'm sure the ultimate grip isn't as good, but the feel is there. I think the grip will be vastly superior to the Ecsta 712s I've been using for Autox (and street, BTW)

I wish I could phrase what I mean a bit better, I've been trying to come up with the right words.

Rice might also be driving Mom's old GS-R at some events too. Trust me. If he's got the choice between the understeering pig of a stock GS-R and a new mid-engine MR Spyder, he's picking the Spyder every time. I sure as hell would.

I don't think the GS-R has a lot for the Celica at an autocross.
