that be me :) Last week I was gonna post this, but larry had to go and spill beer on his server or somethign and the board was down ;) Out of all the v6's i've raced, beaten, whatever..there was this one Camaro V6 at CU that kept eluding me. When I was stock and he had I/E we ran even from 50-110 on the highway. Well months later...my bolt on's completed, I put the challenge out. This guy has run a best of 15.1 at 91mph, so I knew it wouldn't be a normal trouncing like I'm accustomed to when I line up next to a GM V6 F-Body at a light. The terms of race were this:
1. Run what you brung
2. Loser buys winner beer.
After our car club meeting we headed out to Denver Downs to line em up. He was running ZR-1 wheels with some 315 width rubber out back. I was running my 15's and my 215/60/15 BFG Touring T/A's (laugh, but these kick teh **** out of my stockers)
I had just installed my Tri-Ax short throw shifter a week before, with an offset preload, teh 2-3 shift is literally a push up, instead of having to angle the shifter and find the gates. Since I wasn't used to this I had missed the 2-3 shift a lot during practicing, so I was pretty nervous about this race.
I had crap in my car from school, and he ran with his sub box in. I left my California Emissions smog pump box plugged in and decided to do smooth quick shifts, instead of powershifting so I don't blow the 2-3.
I bring up my revs to 2k, and pray to the tire gods that I can somehow jump off the line without smoking the rears down. I know this guy can literally drop his car at redline and not get a chirp out of his 315's, so I'm pretty nervous about this holeshot...it may make or break this race. I'd rather not have to rely on my hp reeling him in after a good headstart(if at all), so a lot's riding on this.
Flagger drops, and I slip the clutch out and pound the gas. Only once before have I been able to cut as wicked a launch on the street, but the gods must have been with me on this run. My car's front end jumped off the ground, got a chirp out back and I put a car on him out of the hole. Now its time to shift the 1-2, and I do it alittle bit too early out of excitement over teh launch and shift at 5200rpms instead of the more powerful 5500 rpm shift. I do it quickly, but didn't give it my all cuz i didn't want to find out if my stop bolt settings were just right ;)
to my amazement I kept my lead on him through 2nd, now its time for the make it or break it 3rd gear. You see, my 3rd gear is where I lose to just about everyone with a faster car. I can hang with or beat all my friends 14 second cars just fine til I get above 60mph or so. Hell, I had half a car on foolmonkey's GT-S at 65, so I know that my car falls flat. Now that you guys know this, know that the afternoon before this race I had a H pipe crossover tube welded into my duals..previously I had just straight pipes, with no exhaust equalization. With the H pipe in there..a whole $15 later..my 3rd gear is no longer death above 65..it can carry on the power now.
I hit the 2-3 shift..'good!", I yell out loud as I continue to floor it. What I'm noticing though is my 1 car lead on him off the line has now carried out to 2 cars and pulling more and more slightly. I cross the finish line at 105 and hit the brakes fast.
Get out of the car to my friends Congrats. I had pulled away from a 91 mph trapped car that ran a 15.1 by 2 cars...Wow! was all I coudl think. Brian comes up to me to shake my hand and ask me what beer I want :) And with that my car ascended to the top of the ladder at Clemson, and the surrounding area (as much as anyone knows)
since my bolt-on power mod stage is done, I'm now focusing at my crappy suspension. I'm getting full length subframes weldded in this Wednesday, then saving up for some Bilstein shocks/struts with H&R Race springs. After that I'm going to finish up my stereo, do some tint, and get soem wheels and good rubber..FINALLY.
After that....it starts to get scary at the power mods I'll be doing..but for right now, while I collect my paychecks..Shhhhhhhhhhhhh ;)
