Hitting lift with broken lift bolts?

Okay one of our members last night while driving home from a meet experienced some knocking sound then the rpm starts to go up and down and he had to tow his car to toyota. The engin just knocks when he tries to start it again.

Now this is definitely not due to miss shift, so I wanna ask if hitting lift with broken lift bolts can cause seroius engine damage?
