heat shield rattle, but all bolts are tight
So ive had this rattle coming from the backside of my engine for a few months. It only goes on between 2000-2300 rpm, and gets louder once warmed up or sometimes just randomly..
so from what i searched and everything, i deduced that it was one or more of the heat shields. today i checked every single bolt that i could find on all of the heatshields, but they were all tight.
so i tried pressing on different parts while reving at 2k, and it seemed to die down when i pressed down on the upper heatshield that covers the exhaust manifold. i rechecked all the bolts, none of them can be tightened any more.
what do i do??
there are minor cracks on the heatshield itself, but dont really look big enough to cause any real rattling.. i will try to take some pics once i get my POS computer to recognize my digital camera..
in the meantime, any ideas? new heatshield? this stupid rattle is really starting to piss me off

Depends on the heat shield that's offending.
If it's the exhaust mani heat shield i'd try installing some washers and lubing up the threads with wd-40/pb-blaster before applying (or header wrap perhaps).
If it's a downstream heat shield that came loose get a big hose clamp and put it around the heat shield exhaust pipe and tighten it a bit to make it extra solid.
There's really not much you can do other than tightening the heat shields more, good luck

I just tore it out. I tear out anything that rattles on any car I own. I literally pulled over one day and ripped the under body plastics on my GT like 9 years ago because they fell and scraped on a long trip.

wow, this brings back memories... my particular problem was the heat shield on my exhaust manifold was cracked. i think i ended up finding a thread on how to remove the heat shield, but if my memory serves me correct i had to remove the front 02 sensor and disconnect a bunch of other stuff underneath the car and still had a really hard time reaching the lower two bolts of the heat shield. so my frustration combined with the fact that i had wiring for my alarm system directly about the exhaust manifold led me to just leaving it on there, and making the buyer of my car aware of the problem. if it bothers you a lot though, and you're fairly comfortable working on your car it may be worth searching for that thread. good luck!

You can try loosening, repositioning it a few mm and then retighten, see if it helps.
