RSX-S misshift. No, not that one, this is a different one *pics*

*taken from offtopic.net .... if owner of pics wants them taken down, please pm me, and i will remove.
I never seen a nearly stock engine blown this bad

A couple of weeks ago, I was cruisin with my friend on a Sunday in his RSX-S. His only mods are: intake, exhaust, and a Hondata Flash. Well, he decides to drop the hammer and show me what his car has. He started redlining every gear. He was at about 7k RPMs in 5th, and for whatever reason, he decides to downshift into 4th. The gear box on a RSX-S is real close together and it's a 6 speed. So, instead of shifting to 4th, he accidentally shifted into 2nd gear right around 7k RPMs. All of a sudden, we hear a "boom" and it started to stink real bad. Right after that, we heard the chunks of the block falling out from underneith the car and hitting the chassis. The smoke got so bad we couldn't see infront of us, so he slammed on the brakes and pulled to the shoulder. We jump out of the car to realize his motor was on fire. Needless to say, we put the fire out before the fire truck came, and got a friend to pull us back home.

Warning: The pics are huge. I'm too lazy to resize all of them.

pic of his car a couple days before the damage...

The night of the misshift...
the trail of oil

parts of the block we found along the road

once we got it back home, we only could find this hole in the oil pan and one other small one.

We thought those were the only holes. That was BEFORE we took the motor out. Boy were we wrong...

pics of the motor coming soon.

It's a total loss internally. I could literally see through the block.

Here's a ton of pics:

Engine coming out.

Still coming out.

Underneeth the car pic. It's the oil pan. We thought it was one of the worse parts.

Still coming out.

Another hole

A hole in the front

A hole in the back

In the front of the engine, right above the oil pan, with the starter out.

http://webpages.charter.net/mroby/bl...s/DCP_0238.jpg[/IMG]

Here's what we got out of the oil pan
This is really art man... I call it cast vs forged.

Oil pan off

believe it or not, these used to be pistons.

Only 1 piston and rod combination survived

If people say a celica is easy to misshift a RSX must be 5x worse if you can go from 5th -> 2nd gear like that.

That looks horrible. Hope the car is up and running again soon. The car itself looks good though. I love the RSX.

come on, they could believe it........... But they wouldn't believe your story because you didn't include the part about the frogs from the beer comercial egging the squirrels on.

yes i did that, i still have a 1zz motor sitting in my closet on a pallet.

and yes it cost 4600 to fix. my block was scratched so i had it bored and resurfaced. i had the pistons and rods replaced. the crank was fine. the head was gone so i had to buy a new bare head.....i still have the stock head. i had to buy all new vavles, and buckets, and shims.

this is (was) the stock head.

it runs very very nicely now, very quiet. my vavles were ticking for awhile before the misshift.

It looks like the metal guy from Terminator 2 melted inside the engine ... lol. Going from 5th to 2nd is pretty damn retarded. You're lucky the car didn't spin out and crash causing a firey death to both of you.

thank god, i got the 02 rev limiter. Now, I understand how safety must comes first to our engines. This will definately prevent the celi to redline and would probaby just have the car shut down instead. Better be safe than sorry at the end. Also, I think we know why the techs decided to alter the rev limiter; the RSX is just an example for a reason.

This makes NO sense whatsoever. Decreasing the rev limiter even on this RSX would do NOTHING to stop what happened here. If he went into the wrong gear at 7k rpms, the motor will still shoot up to 13k rpms just like above.

Lowering the rev limit has ABSOLUTELY NO AFFECT on a dumb**** being behind the wheel of a car and misshifting.

Notice the 2003 Celica rev limit is back up to 8400. Because Toyota realized it was stupid to put it down to 7500

the "rev limiter" wont stop an engine from winding up past its limit if the cars moving faster than a gear can take. Software(computer rev limiter) never beats hardware(car moving faster than a gear can take)

Lowering the rev limit has ABSOLUTELY NO AFFECT on a dumb**** being behind the wheel of a car and misshifting.

Notice the 2003 Celica rev limit is back up to 8400. Because Toyota realized it was stupid to put it down to 7500

I dont know, but it does seem a bit idiotic which doesn't make any sense at all of why they altered the rev limiter and then change it back to its original program. Having a 02 celica, i was angry myself that I couldn't exceed over 7800 rpm and explore the celicas full potential. If you guys do a search on the forums, i'm sure that you will find a lot of comments that the reason techs changed the 02 rev limiter is that a lot of people started to misshift and blowing their engines.

IF i were to say I misshifted from 6 to second gear, the fact is that it wont go over 7800 at all. No matter how hard you push ur engine, I dont think any 02 celicas ever exceeded their rpms over 7800 other than those with swap ecu's. If you do, please let me know; this is very interesting. The car will completely shut down if such abuse takes place, preventing any redlininq or harm to the engine. A long time ago i forgot about the rev limiter and it was a horrible experience. As I kept on accelerating the celica, the car jerk like hell at around 7800 and then completely shut down. Maybe production sales are not as high than 00, 01 so they decided to boost it up back the rev limiter??? I think the rev limiter helps...iono, just my .02 cents.

What are other people's opinion whether you think the 02 celica rev limiter would make a difference or not??
